Forgetting the important date TO HER, and forgetting an important event TO HER.

What I had to do long ago when Wifee clamed up on me:
Get her to talk.
Quietly, kindly ask "What did I do?"
Admit to being a jerk.
Take the blame (all guys are jerks anyway).
I'm sorry (repeatedly) helps.
Bite the bullet and ask what you can do to make it up to your wife.
These occasions have become more rare for my wife and I as I have become more housebroken.

"all guys are jerks anyway" this is not true. Admit your mistakes when you make them. Forgetting your wife's birthday is a jerk thing to do. Doesn't necessarily make you a jerk in general. All men are not jerks.

Deep in the recesses of a guy, hidden out of sight, but occasionally (some more than most) the jerk gets to see the light of day.
I have the same view of that, as my buddy expressed one day about intelligence.

About "Housebroken", my delightful friend Gary brought that term into a conversation between my wife, he and I.
It pertained to me (and husbands in general) with terms we all can understand.
In many ways, husbands need to be trained.
If they are smart at all, they will take the training.

These guys have nailed it, for the most part...except for one detail: each person is an individual. We do not know your wife. We do not know anything about her life, except for what you have told us.
If you don't know how to fix this conundrum that you've gotten yourself into, then the best bet is to just ask her what can you do to make it up to her. Even this might get her mad, because, as her husband, you should know what to do... but talking usually helps.
It would never have crossed my mind to go half way across the world, to a new place, and not take my wife with me (unless it was on business). What sort of person are you, that such a thing didn't raise a few red flags in your mind?

People tend to think I'm a sweet, gentle, nice guy, but my secret is interacting with people as little as possible, keeping my mouth shut, and staying single. In fact, one reason I don't go out of my way to find a lady is that I'm such a people pleaser that I don't want to increase the chance of someone getting to know me well enough to find out they don't like me. This kind if makes you exactly the opposite of a jerk. You should meet people though. You might be surprised. Everyone has qualities about themselves that they worry makes them a bad person, but it doesn't.
As far as the prof goes, his spiel is nothing more than a bunch of sexest mumbo jumbo. It is not true that men need to be trained. Possible true that parents need to stop training their sons to be jerks just because society tells us to have a boys will be boys mentality. Men aren't all jerks and you don't seem like a jerk to me.
