Anyone ever spent time at a bible camp?
|
I went to a Presbyterian summer camp for a week three summers running. It produced some fond memories actually. Yes, there was the god stuff, but no more radical than church and much less 24/7. Hiking with bible reading interludes. Odd, but the hiking was nice.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
We did Bible Camp, but only until we were old enough to go to Girl Scout Camp. Eventually, I became a JC, and then a counselor. No Bible necessary. I loved it. Wish I could do it again.
It wasn't called "Bible camp", but I did do several summer and winter retreats with my church youth group when I was in high school. These were ostensibly recreational, but also had several hours a day of worship / preaching. It actually was about what you'd expect from a church youth retreat - although I do recall one or two of the youth pastors being a little too creepily anti-homosexual.
Meh.
My family could never afford Bible camp, funny, I wanted to go. I did get to go on a retreat with Lutheran youth group to the beach once. It was fun.
My former in laws sent my oldest for a few years as a "gift". It never took.
I went to a Christian camp. It was mostly sailing, horseback riding, team games, etc. There was a little singing of Kumbaya, and I think on Sundays there was some kind of compulsory service probably. And my cabin's leader had as his aspiration owning a hair shop, so. . . not anti-gay too much either.
Not anti-gay? It wasn't a true christian camp.

Ironically, the flaming gay guy was by far the most fun of the counselors. And he even managed to resist the urge to rape children-- must have been one of those rare gay guys. I went to one that lasted a week or two. What I remember was constant preaching that if you weren't absolutely certain that you were "saved"/"born again" then you needed to pray "with all your heart" so you don't risk going to hell. If you're still not sure then you need to try again and again and again "with all your heart". I was an Episcopalian, so they were all certain that I was going to hell. At least once they kept everybody up late in an auditorium trying to get us "saved".
Christianity is an awful religion. |
