New abortion ban proposal in the US (Indiana)

Quote:A state lawmaker has filed a bill that would ban a physician from performing an abortion if the provider knows the pregnant woman is seeking to terminate the pregnancy due to the sex of the fetus or because of a diagnosis of Down syndrome or any other disability.

Although I don't think the government should have the power to dictate anything about reproduction, I have to say that I find the idea of gender-driven abortion sad. I don't have any hard-and-fast rational view of it. It just strikes me as defining gender more important than personal potential.

I agree, when things get down to that level, you have to wonder about the parents and their commitment. To some degree, you have to be prepared for anything. If you're not, you shouldn't be doing it. But the world is full of shit parents that can't be stopped anyhow, short of serious abuse of children.

The thing is that this affects more countries like India or China because people want to have boys only, so it has a patriarchal idea behind. In the western world I don't really think it is that big of a problem.

Above all else it's stupid.
I mean, yeah I get why, some of these families want males who will "carry on the family line". They seem to forget though, a shortage of females makes that kind of impossible to do. Stupid logic.
Oh well I guess more males will have to be gay, which I'm not complaining about hehe

Gender driven abortion banning, I get. Down Syndrome and other disabilities I don't. Not everyone can be Hellen Keller.

Still it is a bit idiotic, no one has the right to ask a pregnant woman why she is having an abortion... It could be for a thousand reasons, and not everyone is comfortable talking about it. We don't have a right to question pregnant women if their abortion is gender driven, and even if we did anyway, there's no guarantee she won't lie.

Personally I'd rather no one have an abortion unless it will kill them, or the kid is going to have severe defects, but I'd also like adoption and foster care agencies to be a lot better. If conservatives want to rail against abortions, why do I hear about adoption and foster care being so crap? They should be funneling money into programs that take care of single mothers, poor families, and orphaned children, but there's some hipocracy going on.
