About the pope... well, he's playing his role. As much as he must abhor terrorism, he cannot condone mockery of his own institution. Also, he's speaking to his own. To the catholics... the guys he's aware are mostly harmless and will be very unlikely to turn to some form of terrorism is someone mocks their religion. It is understandable. To us, the unbelievers... the people who think that all religions are but shows to control the masses, this comes off as poorly thought out. The comparison to mocking someone's mother is a poor one. But they believe it to have some sense, as they would defend their mother's honor, so they should defend their "father"'s. But, to us, he's equating defending a real person with defending a make belief comic book character... Can you imagine if I had do defend Superman's honesty, as some asupermanist (Marvelists, I'm looking at you) would be attempting to smear superman's reputation in tar, by claiming him to be an evil cunt?! Yes he can, it is as simple as saying "No matter what someone says to you you do not have the right to act out in violence" The reason he doesn't want people picking on his god is because that would shatter the illusion for many and get them to think they do not need it, which they in reality do not. It's almost like he's saying it's not fair to pick on our religion, because we can't defend it adequately. Like it's a low blow, or like you're taking on a little kid. He clearly has no "faith" in his or any of his follower's ability to be able to defend their religion rationally. Because you can't, and he knows this.

They don't like it when you point out that rights and claims are two different subjects. They are petty little brats who think blasphemy means force of law to get rid of them.
