Sad.

Are you implying that it is an economic issue? Corrected.
"Bake the children in the pies, sip the tea, watch your demise, tip your hat, don't be ashamed, we're all afraid"
"[God] sounds like an abusive lover, 'But dear, I wouldn't beat you if you didn't make me angry'" - Nope
My problem with religious people is not the fact that they hold the beliefs they do, my problem is when they claim that those beliefs make logical sense. If you wish to hold beliefs in fairy tales, that is fine with me. I still think you're silly, but that is fine. But the moment you claim that your views concerning those subjects can safely operate in any realm other than the realm of faith and/or fiction is the moment you deserve to be called on your bullshit.

2 days ago, I was talking to a guy who wanted to beat another guy for being gay, thats the middle fucking east right now.... ugh.
Ever wonder why africa and the middle east are so fucked up all the time ? cuz that part of the world services the rest of the world(mainly the west) best in its current state of poverty and ignorance. No one is gonna help them, and Angelina Jolie's good hearted attempts of helping are meaningless and not gonna make any change.
Hahaha, you gotta love that "macho man, so hetro chest hair" type in the Middle East I'm sure you'll notice it, Marsellus, even wearing a neckless or jewelry would make them judge you too and say the same stuff.

I would guess there's a fair proportion of atheists all over there, that have to keep pretending for their own safety.
I feel for them, it must be wretched. I hope one day they can connect up properly.

I think not before these countries have proper democracies. I think in most countries it is not even possible to be openly atheists.
I remember a couple of years back protests were going on in Iran for freedom of speech and a more secular government. (If I remember correctly)
I do wonder how the situation is there now, and if the youth in Iran feels like they are getting an opportunity for this, or might get one in the near future.
If there is anyone from Iran on this forum that can tell me more about that, I would love to hear about it.

Given that declaring yourself a non-believer is literally taking your life in your hands in many of the countries involved it's AFAIK impossible to get any reliable stats to work on.
However based on the immigrant families in the UK there is a significant rate of apostacy amongst them. This is concealed due to the extreme reaction this can result in amongst muslims, however once individuals can escape a ghetto structure islam seems as vulnerable to deconversion as christianity.

I declared my Atheism in the United Arab Emirates; nothing happened. But if I wonder over to Saudi Arabia, which is next door to the UAE, I'd get beheaded.
Scary shit.

Well you would have a better chances for America becoming mostly Atheist before the Middle East.
Atheism is a non-prophet organization join today.

I don't live there, but because I used to do so, I keep my eyes on the country, including maintaining contacts within the expatriate community here in America, who in turn hear from family members there regarding internal conditions.
They tell me that there is an underground life that goes on away from the stern eyes of the regime. The country is very young, demographically, and atheism/agnosticism amongst the youth is higher than we here in the west suspect. There's still the frustration with a lack of civil rights and the lack of a social voice that fueled the post-election unrest. The youth felt as if their votes didn't matter and took to the streets. They're angry over the economic doldrums that the regime's intransigence has brought upon the country, and want reform.
I think the government was shaken by those protests and that has caused them to permit an unofficial loosening -- but that the government will absolutely refuse to legally compromise the Islamic foundation of the state, for the simple reason that that will also compromise their own legitimacy to rule.

I can't agree with you. Islam is the religion to fear. All others are more of a nuisance and inconvenience.
