Who are your favorite current Atheists?

Though I do find Matt Dillahunty the most coldly effective at putting down sloppy thinking by theists and philosophers.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat? Huh

I too really like Dillahunty, mostly because while listening to a formal debate with super-educated folks like Dawkins or Hitchens is always nice, it's refreshing to listen to someone in a much more conversational and personal environment, especially from someone who spent decades a fundamentalist Christian.

Atheism+ may talk like they want social justice, but they act more like their only concern is squashing dissent. Starting a movement that's supposed to be about equality while vehemently demonizing anyone that disagrees with you is just stupid.

Dissent? Why would you join a group if you don't share their values in the first place? That would be like me joining a Christian fundamentalist or Libertarian group even though I have nothing in common with either of them. That makes no sense.

Most of the prominent members involved with Atheism Plus definitely support social justice. However, I don't think they support people with opposing values joining the group just to stir up trouble, which was what was happening. This happens with any group. There are always those who will join just to try to tear it apart from within...

He does the same to other atheists as well. lol Matt is the best debater in the atheist community in my opinion.

Oops, I forgot Barker as well. I haven't seen much of DeWitt's work yet but I did see him on an episode of the Atheist Experience once.

Well, I may do that later but I would mostly like to discuss the idea of the involvement of atheists in social justice issues in general. Based on some of the posts I am seeing in this thread, I think it has the potential for a lengthy discussion.

As for attacking muslims?? Uhmm care to tell us why we should be tolerant of weaponized superstitious drivel that incites people to perform the worst atrocities on a daily basis? I'd love to hear your special opinion on that..

What? Thinking You can't be serious. He has spent the past several years making sweeping generalizations about feminists, trying to bait feminists in his videos, making straw feminists arguments, etc... Look at the video on the main page of his YouTube channel. "How Feminists Poison Everything." lol Don't even get me started on how he takes their words completely out of context in his videos and how he becomes obsessive with attacking certain feminists for years at a time. He attacked Rebecca Watson for over 4 years and now that he has his now creepy obsession with Anita Sarkeesian, I am sure he will be making about 50,000 videos about her during the next several years. Wacky Oh and in that video I mentioned, he actually manages to include BOTH Rebecca and Anita. lol

I forgot to mention Seth Andrews. Am reading his book "Deconverted" at present. It's interesting to me that so many of us who once believed go through almost exactly the same internal mental processes to reach the conclusions that it's all hokum. During some parts of his story it's almost as if I was reading about myself. Spooky, in a naturalistic way of course Wink
I spent the best part of my life believing in an imaginary system which could absolve me from imaginary sin and not only that, by believing in the imaginary deity and taking up the imaginary offer of an imaginary eternal life I was offered the chance to live in an imaginary world up in the sky when I died. And what did I have to do to have all of this? Simple, I gave up using my real brain in my real life in this real world. F*cked up or what?

I'm more or less wholly ignorant of all the various "gate" scandal/nonscandals surrounding certain people, and sometimes I think that's a good thing.

You can gladly do without it, just be wary when people bring it up in arguments because these things get extremely distorted and misreported by many people.

Dissent can come from any disagreement, not just one about core values.

My problem with atheism+ plus was the "you're either with me or against me" attitude that they tried to organize around. It's completely counter-intuitive to free-thought.
