Seems like you'd have to get a look at this God before deciding how you felt about it. We'd be dealing with something currently inconceivable. I am unclear how I would respond to things I can't even conceive.

This isn't the first time we've had a theist ask the same question and point to the "no" answers as showing that it's not that we don't believe in god, but that we reject his generous offer and wouldn't even recognize him if he personally walked up and greeted us. It's why he only wanted straight yes or no answers. Yes - "hey, I thought you guys were Atheists!!!!!11!1!" No - "See -- Atheists are closed minded lololololol!!!!!" No shades of grey in his tiny world. No room for nuance; that spoils the game. At least I offered banana.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Here is something to think about the next time some stupid Christian prates glibly about how good God is: It also shows how stupid and thoughtless people are, because it is no secret that very bad things happen in the world all the time. Somehow such obvious facts elude them when they go on about how god takes care of every little detail. Everyone knows that there are more than just little details that are wrong with the way the world is at present, yet they claim how perfect god is in running the world. It is this sort of thing that prompted Voltaire to write Candide, which is a great little book that mercilessly ridicules Leibniz's absurd idea that this is the best of all possible worlds. If you have not read it, I highly recommend it. It is short enough that one can read it in one day. "A wise man ... proportions his belief to the evidence." — David Hume, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Section X, Part I.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

They have really helped to make me see that there really are no prayers answered anywhere. And when people think that god is answering their petty requests it's nothing more than the horoscope effect or something very similar. Good point. Thanks, I've just got it on Kindle and it was free, so I'll look forward to reading that (May 31, 2015 at 1:38 pm)ronedee Wrote: ... will you unconditionally accept Him as your God? It's difficult to respond yes or no to the question. Which god would you be talking about, if it's a god that to me seems totally psychotic and sadistic and makes rules that don't make sense, and if the god can read my mind and knows I'm thinking this then it might be a sign of none acceptance to believe god is sadistic and violent. Although I'd probably try and accept him just out of sheer intimidation, I mean if this guy can torture me with godly power and knowledge that would be intimidating. But then I don't think I could love a god like that. Also I don't understand how I would know that what I'm encountering is a god. I don't know that my mind/brain functions after death, I'm actually assuming that it doesn't, but it if does I don't know that it would be as skeptical as I am now concerning gods. Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them. Impersonation is treason. (May 31, 2015 at 1:53 pm)FreeTony Wrote: To the OP: i would

I'm a little late to the party. but I'll respond. If the god that turns out to exist is the one depicted in the Bible, then, I would accept his existence, but I would not want anything to do with him. I would not accept him as my god. If he decided to send me to hell, I would be powerless to do anything about it, but I would go knowing that I am more moral than this god. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence. RE: IF in the end, you find that God does exist ....

And I'm sure he would prefer someone leading a good, worthwhile life to someone always praying for favours and grovelling on the floor to storybook characters they know can't be real. Whoa .. what if we are all sock puppets of Gawd? Perhaps the divine finger is up every one of our socks directing us in our roles as heroes or villains. Every moral act could just be a puppet show performed by gawd almighty for His own amusement. *mind is blown* |
