To be fair just about all religions promise the same thing. Do good and you get to go to heaven, paradise, the happy hunting grounds, Valhalla, or some other nice place with your favorite deity. do bad and it's off to the lake of fire, hell, hades, the underworld, or some other miserable place for eternity.
Since all religions are identical in that respect if you can renounce one you can renounce all of them for the same reasons.

You're spot on. Saying something is true because it is written in a book is perhaps the worst "proof" anyone could ever give. It is deeply sad that more people do not see this glaringly obviously flaw. They have most likely been indoctrinated so that "the bible is true" is taught to them as a fact, when they are very young and don't know any better. As adults that "fact" is buried so deep in their brain that they will say any gibberish rather than consider that it might not be true. It's their natural mental defences. It takes a lot of willpower and bravery for someone to accept that what they have always assumed is true may not be, and to properly examine it. Plus there's "hell" planted right next to it deep in their mind, emotionally manipulating them in favour of not asking too many questions. It's fucking sick. Psychological programming.
