That's what happens when a country makes "speaking Spanish" a race.

The article describes this student as "light skinned". No, she's probably white (i.e totally European in ancestry), but because speaking Spanish makes you automatically not white in America she's "light skinned". Being white doesn't make you any less Hispanic, it just means you're white. "Hispanic" and whatever race you happen to be are two separate identities. There's no way to "look Hispanic", although being in a position of supposed knowledge on racial issues Dolezal should have known that.

The eight findings in the report admonish the conduct of chair Rachel Dolezal and commissioners Kevin Berkompas and Adrian Dominguez according to a press release issued Wednesday. Investigators began looking into the claims on May 4 after a complaint was filed in April.

The eight findings include workplace harassment, taking on duties not assigned, changing official meeting minutes, and criticizing the person that filed the complaint against all three in public. Leaders in the City of Spokane are most concerned with violating the trust of someone providing information privately to the city.

Ethically however, she is in deep shit.  She lied on her forms about her race, and she is now a professor of African-American Studies at a college, and a local NAACP chapter president.  It will be interesting to see how this story will end.

Ethically I think she's fine. Legally she might not be. If some of those forms were legal documents, then lying on them might be a criminal offense. However, I don't see anything wrong with a white person being a professor of African-American studies, nor being a NAACP chapter president. I don't really see any ethical issue with lying about your race on unofficial / non-legal documents, especially if your prospects would be restricted in some way if you didn't lie.

For example, if she was required to be non-white to become a NAACP chapter president, then I don't think it's an ethics issue to lie on the form; that requirement is discriminatory, and her lying could be seen as an act of civil disobedience.

That is a good point. I did not mean to imply that her race or her self-identification as posing black discounted her from leadership. The NAACP itself has stated that race is not a criteria for leadership positions. They have both white and black people on boards and officer positions. I think one of them said it best that it is a question of integrity. When the local chapter asked for Rachel Dolazal's resignation when she cancelled a meeting to explain herself, I do think that a lot of her colleagues feel betrayed, let down, and lied to by her.

It is the same with claiming Native American ancestry. Some tribes will allow you to claim membership if you can prove you have 1/16 Indian blood in your DNA.

However terrible it may be, it is completely relevant to who the KKK types are likely to want to lynch, and who gets discriminated against.

If you do not appear to be black to someone who is bigoted against black people, then the bigot will not discriminate against you on that basis.  How you feel or perceive yourself to be is completely irrelevant to whether others will discriminate against you.  It is their perceptions that matter for that.

In the case of the subject of this thread, it would appear that the woman looked very white growing up, and is unlikely to have been discriminated against for being black as a child.  If that is true, then if she says that she suffered such discrimination as a child, she is either a liar or delusional.  And one may legitimately criticize her for that.

It doesn't matter what she looked like as a child. She looks black now so the kkk would probably want to lynch her.

The KKK would call her not only a "N*****-lover" but wanting to be one would be the penultimate "race crime" in their eyes.
