In the U.S., the current laws vary from 16 to 18, with most having the age of consent at 16.  See:

So different states disagree about the status of 16 and 17 year olds, but basically agree on those 15 and younger and 18 and older (though the penalties and exceptions may differ).

It would be good if the entire country had one age of consent, so that one need not worry about crossing state lines, but given the way the U.S. is, that is not likely to happen any time soon, if ever.  So if you want to cross state lines and be legal in every state, you should regard the age of consent as 18 to avoid problems.  Or in other words, if your boyfriend or girlfriend is 16 or 17 and you are having sex, be careful what state lines you cross with that person, as it could lead to serious problems for you.

And, of course, if one is in other countries, it would be wise to learn the local laws before one does anything that might be illegal.

Still, it is not surprising that there are different opinions about when the age of consent should be, because there is no point in age where one changes dramatically from one day to the next.  But most people agree that there should be some age of consent (as otherwise having sex with 6 year olds would be legal), and so a line is drawn somewhere.

It's 14 where I live. Which makes sense since this is also the age when you're considered responsible for your actions and can be tried. But it's only open season once you reach 16.

The general age of consent in Austria is 14, as specified by Section 206[8] of the penal code. (The term unmündig is specified in Section 74[9] of the penal code.) Paragraph 4 of Section 206 defines a close-in-age exception of max. three years.

However, Section 207b[10] of the penal code contains an exception to the general age of consent: if one of the partners is younger than 16 years of age and “not sufficiently mature to understand the significance of the act”, then the act is punishable.

The offence “initiating sexual contacts with minors under 14 through the use of computer system” is punishable by two years imprisonment (Section 208a Penal Code).

What's worse about this case is apparently the prosecutor made a plea deal with the guy which included the stipulation that he would not be registered as a sex offender. The guy took the deal. Then, the prosecutor violated the plea deal by asking the judge to rule that the guy be registered as a sex offender anyway. I believe the family are trying to withdraw the plea.

Hopefully they'll manage to get the case review by a different judge as well, because the judge said when sentencing:

"You went online, to use a fisherman's expression, trolling for women to meet and have sex with. That seems to be part of our culture now: meet, hook up, have sex, sayonara. Totally inappropriate behavior. There is no excuse for this whatsoever."

In other words, the judge sentenced him based on his own personal moral view, rather than what the law is (since it's not illegal to go online to meet women and have sex).

It seems to me this case is a reflection of the schizophrenic attitudes we have about sex in this society. In the land of the free and the home of the brave, you can do just about anything you want but when it comes to sex, oh shit, watch the people run around like chickens with their heads cut off!

So, what age is too young? What age should consent matter? How do we rationally apply standards that everyone can agree to? I think part of the problem is that it is much too subjective to the point no one could agree to any objective conclusions.

From my point of view, there should be mandatory rational sex education from age 11; age 11 to 13 is way too young to allow sex between the same age or degrees of 1 to 5 years in either direction, consensual sex should be allowed by age 15 under parental discretion, and kids age 15-19 should be quite aware of how to use contraceptions such as condoms and birth control pills and devices. Laws across all states should be made to reflect those considerations. So long as the sex is consensual and no harm or pregnancy occurs, legally there should be no rape charges. But if the ages of both participants is so far ranging that one is an adult and the other is still a child, then we got a problem. In clear cases of pedophilia, throw the book at the sob or bitch.

I've always hated a lot of the laws around sex offender lists. I remember reading a newspaper article a few years ago about a guy who got put on the sex offender registry. Now, one of the rules about the registry is that you can't be within x-distance of schools, daycares, playgrounds or some other places where children tend to go. Most people just nod their heads and go along with this, but when you look at it from the perspective of someone trying to get by with that millstone tied to their neck, it ain't a great idea. He couldn't find a place to live that he could afford and wasn't too close to one of those areas. He actually had to live in a tent outside of town, just because he couldn't find anywhere else to live. And since then, it's just gotten worse; I see stories from time to time, passing harsher and harsher stipulations to people on the sex offenders registry while any relaxing of those rules is condemned.

And the icing on that cake is that the surest way to get someone to re offend is to put them in a situation where commiting crimes is the only way for them to put a roof over their heads. Sure, there are homeless shelters and programs that should be able to help him, but they're all within areas where he legally isn't allowed to live. I would actually be surprised if this guy doesn't wind up back in jail; not because he's done something especially hurtful, but because his own situation is so desperate. Hell, part of me would think committing a crime and going to prison would be preferable to being forced to live in a tent on the outskirts of town. Suicide would be a legitimate option, if you don't like the idea of prison.

And the final, maybe worst part about it is that the sex offender registry is for life. You don't get off it after a while, with good behavior or anything like that. You could be 90 years old, with alzheimers so bad you can't even recognize your own reflection, you'll still be a registered sex offender.
