RE: Why can't most Christians understand the need for separation of religion and govt?

they don't want the separation because they know their skydaddy ain't coverin their backs, so they need the power of the state to have any sort of power behind their bs!

A related issue with 10 commandments displays on public ground and/or public financed is which version of the 10 commandments is to be displayed??
I'm always annoyed when folks rally around a display without noticing it is a GODDAMNED Catholic or Jewish version instead of the GODLY and CORRECT Protestant version. What's the point of displaying the WRONG version ??? You're just asking God for a good smiting !!!

Like Luckie, I supported separation of church and state when I was a Christian also. Throughout history, Christians have killed those of their members who didn't agree with the majority among them. Ironically, a Christian theocracy would create real persecution for many Christians.
I think that ignorance is the main reason that it seems that so many American Christians don't understand the advantage of the separation of church and state. Yes, that is harsh but ignorance, by itself, can be rectified. The problem is that many seem to enjoy being ignorant.

They can. For every other religion, but theirs. But since they have the Ultimate Truth handy, how could it possibly be wrong to have a christian theocracy?

State sanction and enforcement of doctrine is only desired and/or required if said doctrine is found unsatisfying in the marketplace of ideas. We again run into what was mentioned in another thread, intentionally fomented widespread ignorance among the Christian masses regarding the origin and basis of the Establishment Clause and its refined meaning interpreted by the courts. In short, zealots who would otherwise have us living in a theocracy keep pressing the notion that the ideas that gave birth to the U.S. were based on Christian tradition. The amusing part to me is their ignorance of the fact that they are the types for which the principle was adopted and enforced by other Chrisitans. The separation of church and state was expressly designed to keep different flavors of Jesus from fucking each other over.
History places on full display the abject bullshit foisted on a populous when any particular sect is fully in command of political power. Cries for tolerance are still heard, but they now emanate from the previous tormentors as those having just been tormented conveniently disavow any knowledge of the word tolerance. Christians not wielding any power that have been convinced to support theocracy quite simply have no understanding of what they're asking for.

Why? I think Pious Paladin actually explained it rather well
"Give to Caesar everything that is Caesars"...If God created everything, Caesar deserves nothing and all belongs to God. God gets to say what happens to his stuff, not you.
The idea is the state should be subservient to the will of the Church, if it's not it's in sin. And of course they hate sin

Because they see no problem with religion in government, so long as it's their religion. What is best for me as a christian is by default best for everyone.

If they don't understand how ridiculous their own religion is, why would I expect them to not want to have it take over government?
