Honest Question to Atheists - Best Argument?
July 17, 2015 at 2:02 am
(This post was last modified: July 17, 2015 at 2:05 am by SamS.)
Has there ever been a Christian argument, or something a Christian said, that made you, for even a split second, question whether your current atheistic stance is right?
Even if the argument turned out to be completely fabricated or disprovable, did it at the very least draw you closer to believing the Bible is God's Word and all that such a belief entails?
If not, has there ever been an argument that you didn't know how to answer, or that surprised you against your expectations?
Not looking for "All Christian arguments are idiotic" replies. This is an honest question.

I'm not an atheist but I'm not a believer in Christianity either.
I grew up in Christian world and have spent a long time now discussing religion on the internet and I have to say that I've never been drawn to Christianity at all, in fact, as time has gone by I've found it even less potentially believable. The 'even less potentially believable' aspect may partly be the product of coming across far too many "build a skyscraper by stacking one evidential house of cards on top of another" apologists, of course.
The gods did not reveal, from the beginning,
All things to us, but in the course of time
Through seeking we may learn and know things better.
These things are, we conjecture, like the truth.
But as for certain truth, no man has known it,
Nor shall he know it, neither of the gods
Nor yet of all the things of which I speak.
And even if by chance he were to utter
The final truth, he would himself not know it:
For all is but a woven web of guesses.

No. They are all riddled with holes big enough to drive a truck through.
The bottom line is that unless someone is willing to suspend reason and accept supernatural nonsense they have nothing to offer.

Some of the better pre-sup arguments can be very compelling, and very difficult to unpack. Ultimately though, that an argument is compelling is no indication of whether or not it is sound or valid. To be fair, my "current atheistic stance" on christianity is right by default.....so there's not really any room for argument, and there's only a black mark on apologetics insomuch as it has failed to convince me of christianity -because- it's wasted it's time trying to prove christ (or god) exists. My dog Pongo exists, that's not enough for me to bend the knee to Pongo.........
How about you, has there ever been something [insert competing religion here] said that made you doubt your "current theistic stance"?

Plenty of times in my younger days...yes.
I was a weak agnostic for most of my life.
Coming to this site has turned me into a strong agnostic.
Due to one thing. Knowledge.
Spend a few weeks on youtube, watch a lot of docos on dna, tree of life, Dawkins, Hitch, Krauss (if you're into physics, etc)
It WILL solidify your thoughts... Science doesn't lie! (Even if you think it does!)
No God, No fear.

Well, normally if you really argue with one for more than a hour, i am pretty sure you'll start to doubt everything, starting with your sanity!

Godliness is only a trend. I have never been one to follow trends. Trends are stupid.
Hope I answered your questions.

No, nothing that comes to mind.

They are all formed with the presupposition that god exists. With that in mind, it's hard if not impossible to see any of them as compelling. Having that said, I wouldn't accept an a priori argument for the existence of god anyway, I'd need solid, tangible evidence - extraordinary claim and all.
