It seems that the Sheriff is a big fan of gun ownership and that he thinks that the Sandy Hook shooting was some kind of a government conspiracy. He had it all on his Facebook page but now it's gone.

Pearls in front of swine, and all that. Do try to understand what is being said ... and do avoid deliberate misrepresentation, as seems to be the case here.
You did kind of imply what I said though, and it stands that it doesn't apply if you live in the middle of a large city, even in the 1700s. Regardless of the fact, culture evolves and has to move on. If it didn't then I'd still be living in a country where people would be burned at the stake for heresy.
I'm also finding your answer here going down the lines of "well it's our culture" cultural relativism, which I hate. "It's cultural attitude" means nothing if you're the grieving parent of a murdered child within said apparent culture.

I'd say guns do have some part to play in suicides. If I had a gun, it's way more likely I'd put it to my head and pull the trigger than slice my wrists or jump off a cliff. Suicide isn't easy, and providing an instant kill machine means people are more likely to do something they would have regretted.
Seriously, when I had my freak out in the hospital, if I'd have had a gun, I may well have blown my head off. Having no easy way to hand to hurt myself, I came back to my senses.
I'm all for allowing people the right to suicide, but not for making it this easy to pull off in a moment of madness.

Indeed suicide by gun is certain and painless, hanging is a very painful death and not guaranteed to work. This is true for many suicide methods, wrist slashing taking pills etc. Guns are quick and effective, the very ease would be sure to bump up the suicide rate. There are times when if I'd had access to a gun I'm sure I'd have used it.

The one "witness" exaggerated. The shooter did not ask them one by one if they were Christians, but asked the entire group if they believed in God, then said "I'll meet you there".
On top of that his social media posts have him describing himself as a believer.

Actually, I have no real issue with machines designed to deal death. I actively support the right of anyone - anyone at all - to carry a full-sized guillotine around with them, anywhere they choose.
But when there are machines that are small enough to hide in a pocked or under a coat, and these machines can kill several people in a matter of seconds, then control and regulation of these things becomes a moral imperative. The notion that anyone who wishes to do so can buy a firearm is baffling to me (I'm told that's basically how it is in the US. Apos in advance if I got it wrong).

There were stats out a while back that gun suicides were successful 85% of the time as opposed to 3% for drug overdoses.

This is just me, but being stabbed frightens me more than being shot. But yet, I don't think we're doing too much to regulate carrying knives as compare to guns.
