The exclusion of scientifically trained people is a bit strange...One isn't automatically a certain brand of atheist just because one is a scientist of some sort.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Bambi ... Nobody believes in gods because nobody has seen one!
They only believe in books about god(s)...!
You tell me what criteria you use to decide that the Lord of the Rings is fiction and I'll use your very own logic to disprove the bible.
gotta go, time to chant the atheism psalms ...

An atheist living in modern era is an atheist.....living in the modern era.
I don't mind being called a heathen, though....I'm very much one of those.

That won't work for me. Reminds me of a problematic part of my anatomy.
But there are other categories to be considered besides "do you believe in god(s)" - atheism and "are you certain that gods do or don't exist. In addition to being atheist and agnostic, I am also ignostic since I find the 'god(s)' in question poorly defined. I'll also cop to being apatheist since the questions concerning whatever these god things may be doesn't really interest me. (That said, I can admit to finding the question "why has god belief been so prevalent for so long" very interesting.)
So there are at least four god questions the answers to which can help to classify atheists. They are:
Do you believe in god(s)?
Are you certain whether they exist?
Do you know what we are even talking about when the G word comes up?
Do you care whether or not gods exist?
No.

Since it is now the fashion in this thread to answer your questions:
No.
It depends on which one we are talking about. For many, yes. As certain as I am of anything. More certain than I am that China exists. And I am pretty sure China exists.
Sometimes. Sometimes, though, the person is just speaking gibberish.
Yes. Frankly, I question whether anyone really does not. Do you not care if there is a being who might torture you for eternity? Of course you do! So I do not believe those who say they do not care. I don't think they have thought the matter through adequately.

The idea of something as amazing as a god finding pleasure in roasting its own creation is so ludicrous that I can't take it seriously. I see no reason to think there's the remotest chance of that, even if there is somehow some big daddy.
If actually there is some psychotic maniac with powers beyond my imagination, then what the hell can I do about it anyway? So I'll ignore it and carry in regardless. If something like that is in charge, we're all fucked.
The link between God and a torturing maniac is just a ridiculous storytelling religious device and I don't see the two as connected.
"God" is odds on to be a computer, if anything, in my estimation. And I don't care whether or not there is such a computer, it makes no difference.

The LC of my prophecy is evolved machine intelligence. Funny bits are that the LC can be YHWH but YHWH cannot be the LC, and that the LC is a "God" or a pantheon, or everything, or nothing depending upon how one looks at it... see why you don't want none of this stuff?

For all practical day to day purposes yes. Philosophically no.
To the extent theists appear to yes. But it's still pretty murky.
Only if there turns out to be one.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

I should have hoped the lack of a suffix would have spoken for itself.
Just having fun with ya. I think the groups who deny labels and espouse individualism to remarkably similar (at least to the extent of any other group).
