Same here, majoirty are at the very least apathetic to religion if not outright atheists in England so there's no closet to live in. I don't particularly care what religion people have until they try and convince me they're right. Then I, and the majority of the population, laugh.

It really astonishes me to what degree people are literally AFRAID to "come out" with their Atheism.
Don't misunderstand me, I don't blame people for being afraid;
what I'm saying is that Atheism is obviously nothing to be ashamed of, whatsoever.
A person is entitled to their beliefs, or lack thereof.
No human being should have to justify it to another why they find something completely undetectable and unproven
difficult or impossible to believe in.
It is really DISGUSTING how much some (but not all) religious people
make non-believers AFRAID to be honest about this entirely legitimate and SANE state of mind.

Pretty much in the closet. My family is fundie, so I make a point to not discuss religion with them. And everyone I meet where I'm living now seems to open with some kind of scripture quote, so I just kind of smile and nod there. I need a new venue to meet some people.
A couple of my husband's relatives know, since we're fairly close and they are also non-religious.
I'd like to be mostly out, with religion not up for discussion with my family. They know we don't go to church, don't pray before meals, and didn't baptize our kid, so it shouldn't be that big of a leap, but I'm afraid an actual admission of atheism would break my parents.

I have been lucky enough to never be afraid of being 'out'. I don't go around in FUCK GOD t-shirts and slapping people on the arse with copies of The God Delusion though (as fun as that sounds). I'm a reactive atheist, I'll never bring it up in public without being directly asked on religious matters. On here, is a rather different story.

I'm actually able to get along in life fine without my family. I know that's sounds bad, but it happens to be the truth. My mother was an extremely difficult person to deal with before she caught fundamentalism...always a huge fan of disowning and banishment. The religious element just gives her (and other family members) cover for behaving like a pack of vicious jackals.
