RE: Sin & Forgiveness
-and you would be wrong.  It's a rapist catching up to you....
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I'm glad you joined too Smile You're not going to get banned for making statements of belief we may find unpalatable, whether you meant to say them or not. If we had that rule, this really would be "atheist forums" pretty quickly Big Grin And even then, only a subset of atheists. I've found this to be an amazingly open forum where difficult subjects can be properly discussed without censorship.

I still have a bug where I can't edit other people's posts. I keep trying to put inappropriate smilies into their serious messages, and I get some bullshit error about access rights or something. Why am I being censored? Tongue
Feel free to send me a private message.
Please visit my website here! It's got lots of information about atheism/theism and support for new atheists.

How can that be justified with ones conscious. Let alone a Devine entity. Say for instance someone commits a murder for any reason. How can anything forgive you for that under any circumstances. People will always take the easy way out or do the wrong thing just because there is the comfort of forgiveness. I am a practicing Buddhist and I believe in Karma. There should not be any escape from that. Most of my friends who believe in God has told me they have been forgiven for the sins that they have done. I find that ridiculous and how gullible people can be.  Some sins go to the very extreme. Not things like lying, stealing etc.

What are your thoughts.

You have to actually be sorry. You can't just say "sorry God" and think that will do anything. It's what's in the heart that matters. If your heart is still in a dark place, you are too. But yes, people can change. A person can do something heinous like commit murder but come to feel fully remorseful and change. Your friends might have a simplistic view of forgiveness, or they just failed to fully explain what it means.

Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Ditto. Why is it anyone's business what I do with or to my body if I don't hurt another living being?

Probably because it is damaging to the body and can effect/alter a person's actions and good conscience. Not that I agree, but that's my guess as to why someone would think it's wrong.

It is considered wrong because you are not in your sensors under the influence of alcohol. Your careless, your not in the present world. You can easily break the other 4 precepts if your under alcohol. You may even forget you have a family at home and act with your instincts instead of the brain. If humans didn't have ability to think or be creative what will our natural instincts be ? Eat, drink and reproduce.

Your hurting yourself. Your killing your cells, your hurting the organs in your body , once your too much intoxicated you may even hurt people or things around you. hence it is considered wrong.

You think that beer makes me forget I have a family? You think it makes anyone forget that?  Excuse me while I laugh myself right to death.  I don't see the problem with leaving "the present world"...that just helps me on the path to non-attachment, doesn't it?

Breathing oxygen hurts organs and kills cells too.  Got any advice regarding the moral dangers of breathing? Is the above what passes for buddhist "wisdom"? Sounds like a bunch of teetotalling busybodies to me.

Good sir breathing is something you can't control :-)

People don't drink for the taste. When they drink alone it is in order to seek release from tension and when they drink socially, it is usually to conform. Even a small amount of alcohol distorts consciousness and disrupts self-awareness. Taken in large quantities, its effect can be devastating.
