You know those people who say they believe the Bible is true and inerrant, but then when you get specific you find out that's really a blanket statement and they have, in fact, cherry-picked the rules they like? It's probably the same phenomenon.

Not necessarily. Sharia can be interpreted in different ways. Not everyone who believes in Sharia believes that Allah actually wants adulterers to receive the death penalty or thieves to have their hands chopped off.
