There is some truth to this. Most people answer with Abraham Lincoln or George Washington. Occasionally you will get some listing the inventors like Edison, Bell or Henry Ford, but for the most part it is founders or those who had great influence in shaping the culture while in political office.

German Karl Benz actually invented the automobile, but Henry Ford invented the Moving Assembly Line which led to the mass production of automobiles as well as many other products today.
