Since Paul claimed to have stayed and talked with Jesus' brother, I think we can assume the Catholics are wrong about Mary remaining a virgin for life, even in the astronomically unlikely event she was a virgin when she gave birth the Jesus.

The only way Mary could have claimed being a virgin was if her father had taken a cloth and rammed it up her vagina just before she got married and kept the bloody cloth as proof of her virginity. The story does not include any mention of her father doing that.

It makes more sense to consider that Mary was a metaphor for Samaria, the virgin that had never produced a prophet to the Jews, represented by Joseph. Jesus was the Samaritan prophet that was meant to unite the Samaritans and the Jews in accordance with the Old Testament fairy tale. He certainly acted like he was a Samaritan and never denied that he wasn't. Remember, his family came from outside of Judea. The story has a bogus census in order to get him born in Judea.
