That's the thing about horror. It's really a more nebulously defined genre than you think. In my list, I actually admitted that some of the entries might not count as horror to others.
For instance, Thena323 just put Se7en as one of her favourite horror films, and, while I do love it, I am honestly inclined to think that, as gruesome as the crimes they describe (notice we hardly see the aftermath of the crime, let alone the crime itself) and John Doe's mind are, it's far too dominated by the police procedural format to really feel like a horror film to me. It would be like putting Reservoir Dogs on the list.

That was a fucking great movie. There are quite a few good ones that utilize mirrors, but Oculus is probably the most screwed up of them all.
Yeah it really creeped me out. Watched it with my friend and his fiance, and he was getting too scared to watch it so he started talking and making fun of it and how stupid it was, until I said you just don't want to watch it because your scared, and basically gave a nervous laugh of confirmation.
What's a scary movie that I should watch that's on par with Occulus?

I too see 'horror' as a very broad category. Most viewers categorize Cronenberg's Crash as either pornography or anti-pornography, but the motivations and arousals of the characters are so disturbing, the movie is in fact an entry in the horror category too. The 'universal' character of the Canadian city chosen for the location also works in this regard, these people he portrays could be everywhere . . . .

I'm getting ready to watch a film called Nomads with Pierce Brosnan. Judging from the trailer it looks pretty nuts and like it could either be very scary or silly.

Though my horror introduction came from novels, I can't bring myself to go back to them even though I kind of want to for the same reason that I don't watch new horror movies.
Also, I tend to read right before I go to bed and I would never, ever sleep if I read horror books at that time.

I agree about se7en being more of a police procedural that "true" horror to me, though it does tick off some of the "horror movie" characteristics. For a movie to be "horror" to me I have to have long periods of time where I'm hiding my face behind my hands, pervasive jump-scares (not just one or two), and graphic death scenes, not just graphic after-the-fact crime scenes but the viewer has to be present for the death. Some suspense movies tick off some of these characteristics, but there's the magical je nai se quoi thing to horror movies that make categorizing them sometimes rather personal.

Generally speaking, I see horror movies as movies with the primary aim to induce in the viewer constant fear of the unknown or the supernatural throughout the movie. Unfortunately, a lot of horror movies (especially these days) do not succeed in doing so, and only end up being either campy or trying too hard. IMO, the best horror movies are ones that aim to spook you via your imagination, not by showing you gore or making you jump with shock. At least, you know the director and/or writer are putting in some considerable effort when they rely on your imagination to do the scaring and not on those silly modern horror movie cliches.
