First let's not split hairs with a battle axe, I just told why specifically it bothers me.  (And Hispanic is not a race) And I used I white people as an example because that's what the article was about. Secondly I just said I don't have the right to tell anyone what to wear.

And no assimilation is not the answer. Assimilation is the destruction of culture not its preservation. Cultural exchange can only happen when peoples are on equal footing. Think Japan and Western Europe.

I don't believe it causes destruction if the assimilation is voluntary, not forced. A culture can not remain static. If it does it will cease to exist except in memories.

Japan's inspiration for Jpop comes from europop and punk. A lot of current western fashion has been inspired by Japanese wood prints and floral arragments. And these exchanges were MUTUAL. Not someone with no understanding of culture using because "hey that looks cool." I don't mind mutual exchange but forced assimilation is something different.

I'm not seeing it. He didn't attack this woman in any way. She accosted him for using "her people's hairstyle" and he just defended himself in a non-violent and non-offensive manner. I don't see any indication of assholiness.

However, the fact that white people in this country can't understand the significance of natural (unstraightened) hair in the African American community and the struggles we have with the right to wear our hair the way it grows, and wear it healthy manageable styles irritates me.

... how could "white people" possibly understand something like that if they've never experienced it? I'm of Dutch descent, and my hair grows half barely-wavy, and half corkscrew. People have told my all my life my hair was inappropriate in whichever way they didn't like it. Should you understand my plight as a Dutch person and consider my feelings by not assimilating my Dutch culture and getting a keratin treatment?

So it's not just hair. It's never been just hair. Hundreds of years of denying black beauty.

Of being told your hair is ugly, dirty, nappy, unprofessional, inappropriate. And white people can't leave even this unassimilated.

You've never heard that imitation is the highest form of flattery? "White people" wearing their hair in dreads or braids seems pretty much the opposite of them telling "black people" their hair looks ugly, dirty, nappy, etc., don't you think?

For anyone who doesn't know, locks are extremely difficult to take care of, no matter what your race is. They have to be cleaned. Every six weeks the person should go to a stylist who knows how to incorporate new hair growth into the existing dread and do it correctly.

People seem to have this notion that those with dreadlocks are dirty. They couldn't be more wrong. It is a very tedious hairstyle to maintain and you have to be dedicated to the management and upkeep if you want them to remain decent looking.
