I think castration would be cruel and unusual.. and it wouldn't really stop them from committing crimes in the future except for rape (maybe).  Just enforce the laws better and equally, and throw this guy in the clink for 40 years.

Yeah, a lot of rapists and child molesters wouldn't survive 40 years in jail. Someone would end up caving his head in with a dumbbell in the gym or something. Quite rightfully so, too.

Why don't we castrate rapists? Seems we just throw them in jail for a short amount of time, put them on a register when they get out and that's it. No actual punishment.

Sometimes you fall back on - I don't know what to call it - so I call it your youth.

First, the practical aspect. Castrating them doesn't solve the underlying aspect. Rape isn't about lust, it's about a power trip for the perp. This according to forensic psychologsts and profilers. It's about excercising power over the victim.

Secondly, castrating them doesn't solve the issue because the drive isn't lost. They merely can't perform anymore and will seek another outlet, such as killing or torturing. Again, according to people having studied the issue extensively.

Third, our society doesn't live in the Middle Ages anymore where you inflict bodily harm as a punishment. We lock them away. Usually for a pretty long stretch. Our European societies also have the instrument of security custody, which makes it possible to keep a perp in captivity, even if they already served their time. If trained professionals deem them unsave to release to the public. Breijvik is such a case. He's sentenced to 20 years because that's the maximum punishment in Norway, but there's no chance he will ever walk the streets again. There are numerous others, of course. One of them a case from my youth. In 1988 there has been a scandalous hostage situation, with several casualties. Scandalous because of the role the press played back then. The main perp served his sentence, but they don't release him because he's still considered dangerous. Interesting case, by the way, might want to look it up. I remember it as if it happened yesterday.

Here we go again with the fucking age thing. I have absolutely zero sympathy for rapists. Whether the state harms them or the other prisoners do, the rapist will get what is coming to them.

It's as simple as that.

You have to make a distinction between not liking and if it actually makes sense. In the 70ies and 80ies there has been a law in certain states that allowed for chemical castration. Well, it didn't work, according to professionals. That's the difference between a scientific and an emotional approach.

The only thing that makes me hesitate is the prospect, however uncommon, of wrongful conviction. It's the same, and only, reason I oppose the death penalty. You can always let an innocent person out of prison but you can't give them back their life (or their balls). 

I think a 20 year minimum sentence is in order, though. Rape should be thought of as the most evil crime. Even premeditated murder can possibly be morally mitigated in some extreme cases. There are no conditions where rape is ever justifiable.

Well, maybe a part of your consideration should also be that it doesn't do the job. According to fucking professionals, as I repeatedly said. Goes for both, castration as well as capital punishment, which doesn't do shit for being a deterrent.
