US military lifts transgender ban

Well done America.
Link to article here.
BBC News Wrote:The US military has lifted its ban on transgender members, allowing them to openly serve in the country's armed forces.
The policy, which will allow members to transition gender while serving and will set standards for medical care, will be phased in over a year.
It will ensure no-one can be "discharged or denied re-enlistment" based on gender identity.
Transgender servicemembers on duty will be able to serve openly.
"This is the right thing to do for our people and for the force," Defence Secretary Ash Carter said in prepared remarks.
"We're talking about talented Americans who are serving with distinction or who want the opportunity to serve.
"We can't allow barriers unrelated to a person's qualifications preventing us from recruiting and retaining those who can best accomplish the mission."
The policy does not allow new potential service members who are transgender to join the military until the new programme is fully in place.

It still baffles me that it took so long though. Apparently they officially lifted the ban on the 1st, June but for some reason major networks are just reporting it now. Maybe they took a while to get things in place, and it's worth noting that it will take a while til the programme is fully in place for new transgender recruits. But it's still a hell of a lot better than before. So yeah, well done to the US for working towards doing the right thing.
And here's a story worth reading about a closet trans person serving in the US Air Force.

It baffles me that they took so long to legalise gay marriage. It's the year twenty fuckign sixteen but oh well it looks like this is how (un)progressive the world is.

Yeah. I think some people found it weird that my first reaction to the fantastically awesome news of the legalization of gay marriage was "WTF?! This hasn't already happened?!?!? Fucking hell."

You beat the USA by what, 3 years?
Things are generally done here on a state-by-state basis. The state I live in legalized it by public vote in 2012. What took you guys so long?

Massachusetts legalised it in 2004, almost an entire decade before the UK.
