What meaning does love have to an atheist?

The very fact we DO see meaning behind our love debunks any claim contrary. As to the views expressed here sounding like someone who has never lost anything they loved....it's hard to be polite to something so offensive, so I'll just say that the loss of a loved one is in NO WAY demeaned by atheism.
My religion is the understanding of my world. My god is the energy that underlies it all. My worship is my constant endeavor to unravel the mysteries of my religion.
Quote:Love is like a computer network--Jesus, give me a break. My pleasure. One leg or two? As it turns out,I've been in love more than once,as well as married and divorced. The first time was at 20,when I was still a theist. The last time was from age 46 to now. (I'm 62) The euphoria of being in love was the same,as theist or believer. The depth of attraction, liking, respect, attachment and commitment was the same,as theist or atheist. The anguish of loss was as visceral as theist or atheist. The depth of your arrogance is really starting to piss me off. RE: What meaning does love have to an atheist?

Well, you tell me: if atheism is true, what meaning can there be? And I don't deny your relationships have meaning. On the contrary, it's my philosophy that gives them meaning...even more than Christianity does. (August 10, 2010 at 3:18 am)padraic Wrote: My pleasure. One leg or two? What your saying has nothing at all to do with what I said. You see, I'm coming from the perspective that you're wrong about there being only a material world. So, you're the one devaluing your relationships; I'm the one giving them meaning. Unless you have something up your sleeve that will make a chemical reaction between two forms of matter "meaningful." As for my arrogance pissing you off. You're arrogant, too. Go take a cold shower. RE: What meaning does love have to an atheist?

I love my children very much. In fact, I can't imagine loving anyone or anything else as much. Now, do I understand fully what processes are involved for the creation of that love? No. But I do believe that love is a psychological process born out of evolution and natural selection and is therefore a natural product of the Cosmos.
For you to imply that my love for my children which is a natural and very real emotion is somehow meaningless just because I attribute it to the natural laws of the Cosmos rather than a supernatural deity is not only incredibly naïve and arrogant but also shows a breathtaking ignorance of any worldview other than your own. Firstly, your signifies ownership. You're is a contraction for you are. Don't they teach grammar in the spiritual realm? /kidding You don't give any of our relationships meaning. You are a random dude in a forum. You have no basis on which to make your ridiculous assertion that we're devaluing our relationships, either. Furthermore, where do you get the idea that matter isn't meaningful? In fact, the word matter and all of its defintions essentially mean thing, substance and meaning. You act as if taking god out of the equation makes everything meaningless. You sound like a battered wife who refuses to believe her life is worth anything without her abuser. Well, not quite, but close enough for a hand grenade. (August 10, 2010 at 1:50 am)Edward the Theist Wrote: That's why Jesus said love your neighbor as yourself ... No. I don't give a damn what Jesus said. I am not giving my neighbor a hand-job.
I used to tell a lot of religious jokes. Not any more, I'm a registered sects offender.

(August 10, 2010 at 1:50 am)Edward the Theist Wrote: Here let the theist with the worst reputation set the record straight for you: If God is monistic in nature, which I believe He is, then love is a revelation of that unified nature. You feel like you are one with the other person, and in fact, you are. That's why Jesus said love your neighbor as yourself and to love your enemies. I don't think he really expected that to work, I think he wanted us to understand the monistic nature of God through our unity with one another. So, love does matter.
