Active listening within friendships

RE: Active listening within friendships
With some people... I give up trying to have a meaningful conversation with them whatsoever (in person) because they either talk over me or clearly don't actually listen to anything I say. They're talking to themselves, basically. So I just politely say nothing of consequence.

What do you mean? You always say nothing of consequence.

Tongue
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I feel like a load is taken off with an interrupter.  The more someone else wants to talk the more I get to just relax and people-watch.  They're some of my favorite people...so much to say, so self sufficient.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're giving him a compliment?

Ol' mama is very soft on me!
I'd like to make it up by giving her something very hard!

Obviously this is something that would summarise a section of conversation, not something to do after every sentence.

When done subtly this is nice. I really hate when I'm already frustrated and someone starts rewording everything I say back to me.

"I feel like you never listen to me!"

-You're feeling like I'm not listening to you but I want you to know that I am

"Why are you telling me what I just told you!?"

-you're wondering why I'm telling you back everything you've already said, I just want you to know I'm listening.

"I can gauge whether or not you're listening by your responses without you copying everything I say!"

-you think you can tell whether or not I'm listening by how I respond but I just want to be sure because I don't want you to think I'm not listening.
