Problem of good and evil for an atheist
RE: Problem of good and evil for an atheist
The self is a lot larger than many people think. As I said, if it's in your self interest to help others, that's still your self-interest.

Especially if you're a fat bastard in denial.

'False religion' is the ultimate tautology.

Does the self have any boundaries? Who would know the right answer?

I would imagine that would be where the skin and hair ends on our bodies.

That sounds a tad restricted to me, but would be ok if you lived in a coffin.

Let me know as soon as I exist as myself in something other than a human body, because restricted or not, that seems to be about where the concept of 'self' ends, though the arguement could be made for just the human brain. ... but you know, I really don't like philosophy all that much.

I'll give you an example of why, as my perspective on everything is apparently much like an engineer's:

If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925

Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan

From your picture, you look fairly slim, actually (assuming that's you). Even if you were fat, at least you wouldn't be in denial. Wink

Oh you mean in denial about being fat? No,I'm not,but I AM still about 25lbs overweight,at 5'10' and 165lbs. A few years ago I was up to 220. That probably contributed to me developing type 2 diabetes.

My waist is 42". Healthy maximum for me is 36"

DarkestOfAngels, what site is that short comic strip from? It's awesome and I'd love to find more of that quality.

So, the self consists entirely of matter?
