If I ever did that I would immediately go and throw myself off a cliff.

I feel for the mother. She was at the hospital visiting her injured sister and gets a call, or comes home to find out her daughters are dead.
Tragic.

These always make me cringe. I leave the oven on, forget to lock the door and lose my car keys. This was my nightmare. Now they are way to old not to just open the door and get out. But I do believe some of these parents are just over committed abnd over tired. And they probably are ready to throw themselves off a cliff.

RE: 2 more additional hot car deaths
I remember me 19 years old. 7 months pregnant. I had a prenatal appointment. The plan was to drop Lelibug off with my sister and then go to the doctor. I had so much running through my mind. I was nervous. I needed to be home by a specific time. I parked my car, sat there in the silence a few minutes, and then I got out to go into my appointment and Leli said "bye mommy". So nonchalantly. She didn't understand why I cried so much after pulled her out with shaking hands. Had she been asleep...she'd have never survived. It takes just minutes for a small child to die in a car in the hot sun. I got in a habit of obsessively checking after that. I hate thinking about any of this stuff. I hate thinking how fragile our children's lives can be. I hate thinking about how just a few seconds of inattentiveness could cost me everything. And even worse when I have to allow someone else to watch my kids. These stories are so fucking depressing.

You know, it occurs to me that intellectually, I know that a couple of dozen lives are statistical noise. Emotionally, that kind of loss is a devastating tragedy for those involved. I'm not willing to write it off as simple bad parenting because of the former, and I weep for the parents for the latter.

I'm lucky in that as an Air Force firefighter I never responded to this sort of emergency -- it would have devastated me. One of my coworkers had, and after he told me about it, it stuck in my mind. One becoming a father five years later, I made sure to check every time.

You child-safe your home, you double-check your back seat, you teach them to look both ways before crossing the street ... and you still dread the Phone Call you hope never comes.

Little kids are frighteningly easy to forget about. I never left my kids in a hot car, but I remember after I had the triplets I was laying on the couch while my friend was playing with the other two. They couldn't have been very old. I was sitting there watching them a good five minutes, trying to figure out what was wrong with the picture. Then it hit me--where was the other one! I asked my friend, and she said "You're holding her." And there I looked in my arms, was my other daughter.

Thankfully they're developing this device called Sense-A-Life that is supposed to alert you in the event that your child is in the car seat when you get out of your car. If you don't respond within a certain time, it sends an alert to another parent or guardian. I think it's a great idea.
