When I was in the hospital for mental health treatment in 2011 there was a woman, a nurse, with a bad back and an oxycodone dependency. I don't care to get the details, but suffice it to say there was an incident with her baby and some stairs. Was it her fault? Maybe. Probably. I don't know. Were I in her shoes, I don't think I would have needed the hospital, you know?
I never put my own kid in jeopardy - but I can't even kid myself into thinking it's because of my superior parenting
I used to be real hard-core about slamming parents who made this sort of lapse, until I remembered that we all fuck up ... it's just that most of us are lucky enough that our lapses don't have fatal consequences.
Alcohol being involved in this incident, or your acquaintance with her own addiction involved in her mishap, well, that's life's way of telling you you're on the wrong trajectory. Far be it for me to dogpile at that point -- if someone ain't going to listen to life, they sure as hell ain't going to care what I have to say.
In my own alcoholism I did some dumb things. I'm grateful those stupid actions didn't have permanent consequences.
