It's a repeat. Can't remember how many times Brians posted this. Next time I'll just suggest that he toss the books he doesn't like into a fire, for reasons of seditious effect, and be done with it.

Who is demanding we burn books, much less TV shows? I think the bible is full of crap but I would never demand people burn it. But people do take what should be mere entertainment too seriously, just like football and hockey fans will stupidly fight over it.

A ban on sports is more difficult to pull off than a book burning.
(you do remember how seriously I take these "I don't get sci-fi, so imma bitch about people who do" threads...right?)

Except Star Trek did inspire a lot of inventions, and it continues to be a thing for our society to strive towards.

No, it's an awesome TV show. If it were shitty, then it wouldn't have the fan base that it has, and it wouldn't be popular enough for CBS to make yet another Star Trek series to take off early next year.

I'm actually not all that fond of TOS. If it weren't for TNG and Movies 2,3,4,6,8, I probably wouldn't be a fan of ST...

Was he? Putting a female black communications officer on the bridge isn't ham handed. It's rather subtile.
Go watch Turnabout Intruder, and remember Gene was responsible as a writer for that. One thing I've noticed about Uhura is that all too often she's a glorified secretary, rarely considered for a responsible role (eg on a few occasions she's the seniormost bridge officer left on the ship yet never actually has the conn until TAS).
Roddenberry was very much of his time, more progressive than most, but still largely reflecting the prejudices of 1960s white America.

Really? Why? I was living in a small town in Indiana at the time and the consensus among my peers was "Oh, the hot chick from Star Trek?" Not the "hot black chick". This in a town where blacks weren't welcomed and didn't stay long if they moved in.
