Is Russia about to invade Ukraine?

Is Russia about to invade Ukraine?
inb4 but muh crimea.

Full article:

Quote:The Pentagon has identified eight staging areas in Russia where large numbers of military forces appear to be preparing for incursions into Ukraine, according to U.S. defense officials.

As many as 40,000 Russian troops, including tanks, armored vehicles, and air force units, are now arrayed along Ukraine’s eastern border with Russia.

Additionally, large numbers of Russian military forces will conduct exercises in the coming days that Pentagon officials say could be used as cover for an attack on Ukraine.

Russian units will likely practice reinforcing the [Crimean] peninsula through such activities as amphibious landings and air defense exercises, and this may involve the change out of equipment and long convoys of military vehicles,” one defense official said.

The military exercises are an ominous sign. Similar large-scale Russian exercises were conducted near Ukraine a month before Moscow carried out the covert military operation to take over the strategic Black Sea peninsula in March 2014.

Navy Capt. Danny Hernandez, a spokesman for the U.S. European Command, told the Washington Free Beacon that the upcoming Russian exercises are being closely monitored.

Crimea had important naval base. Ukrane has nothing to offer russia, so, there is no reason to invade. They would have done it when russian speaking population living in eastern parts of ukraine were fighting.

Sometimes I wonder where some of you are drawing all these so called media outlets from.

From the mission statement of the Washington Free Beacon.

Quote:dedicated to uncovering the stories that the powers that be hope will never see the light of day" and producing "in-depth investigative reporting on a wide range of issues, including public policy, government affairs, international security, and media

Tinfoil alert when someone speaks about the powers that be and assumes they alone have the news the powers that be don't want to see the light.

Founder of the Washington Free Beacon, Michael Goldfarb. Former associate of the Project for the New American Century. Extreme rightwing thinktank, which contributed to the foolishness of the Bush administration among others.

So no, Russia is not about to invade Ukraine at the moment. The powers that be may have some influence over some of the more serious media networks but a story like that would make headlines. Even more so since the powers that be aren't known for being in cahoots with Putin.

Just creating a discussion. Got nothing better to do at this time of night. I didn't think Russia was planning on invading Ukraine anyway. I personally thought the source was a little iffy too.

Thank you for your input.

Why should they invade at all? Ukraine is largely dependent on Russian natural resources. Russia's much better off keeping them as a customer than by annexing a near bankrupt country. Ukraine would be a liability if Russia were to invade.

RE: Is Russia about to invade Ukraine?
Because Ukraine continue to harbor hopes of joining NATO?  And if Ukraine were to join NATO as a full member Russia's flank would be permanently turned and Russia's days as a power of any consequence in Europe is largely over?

I think any Russian leader with ambition to leave something of a lasting nationalistic legacy would be willing to pay quite a high price to reduce Ukraine to a Russian puppet state again.

The easier explanation of course, a former member of Project for the New American Century wanking off over a doomsday scenario he hopes to sell to the rightwing republicans.

Friendly reminder that russia has exercises around pretty much every border they have with any country. And for reals, if they were gonna kick off, they wouldn't do just Ukraine. Likely push into other countries aswell, because either way NATO would have a fit and send in everything

Amazing how the interests of right wing Americans coincide with those of their right wing Russian counterparts.
