Clergy sex abuse suits could bankrupt San Diego diocese
The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego said Friday it may declare bankruptcy in the coming months as it faces “staggering” legal costs in dealing with some 400 lawsuits alleging priests and others sexually abused children.
In a letter that was expected to be shared with parishioners this weekend, Bishop Robert McElroy said the cases were filed after California lifted a statute of limitations on childhood sexual abuse claims.
Eckery predicted that it would cost the diocese $550 million to settle the cases, none of which have gone to trial.

Dunno how it works in the US, but in most Commonwealth countries, a declaration of bankruptcy doesn’t erase fines imposed for criminal convictions. Don’t let these kiddie fuckers settle.

Thousands of children abused by members of Portugal's Catholic Church over 70 years
At least 4,815 children were sexually abused by members of the Portuguese Catholic Church - mostly priests - over the past 70 years, a report by the commission investigating the issue said on Monday, adding the findings are the tip of the iceberg.
Most perpetrators (77%) were priests and most of the victims were men, Strecht said, adding that they were abused in Catholic schools, churches, priests' homes, confessionals, among other locations.
The majority of the sexual abuses took place when the children were aged 10-14, with the youngest victim being just two-years-old.

Men claim in lawsuit that Texas nun gave them alcohol before priest abused them as children
The victims, who have not been named in the lawsuit filed last week, say they were sexually assaulted by Reverend Henry McGill at the Dunne Memorial Home for Boys orphanage between 1962 and 1971.
They claimed a nun by the name of Sister Mary Bridgette would give them alcohol before leaving them in a dark basement, where they were then assaulted.
McGill died at the age of 84 in 1996. His name was included in a list of priests credibly accused of sexual assault released by the diocese in 2019.
The men are now seeking more than $1m in damages. They argue in the lawsuit that although their assaults took place decades ago, the statute of limitation has not passed as a 2019 raid of the diocese’s offices in Dallas serves as proof that the alleged coverup was still taking place.

Future Pope John Paul II allowed priest to return to work after child sex abuse conviction
The future Pope John Paul II allowed a priest to return to priestly duties after he had served a prison sentence for self-confessed multiple cases of sexually abusing 10- and 11-year-old girls, according to archival documents and interviews published in a new book.
The article focuses on the case of Józef Loranc, a priest who abused a number of girls in the village of Mutne in 1969 and 1970 while teaching Catholic catechism classes. Its findings corroborate previous reporting – also based on archival documents – by the Rzeczpospolita daily in December.
Loranc on multiple occasions forced girls to touch his penis with their hands and mouths, doing so on the front pew of a church during classes. He hid the abuse from the other children present by covering the girls with his jacket.
In September 1970, the priest was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison by the provincial court in Kraków. He was released after serving around a year of that sentence.
Following Loranc’s release, Wojtyła wrote to him in September 1970, according to a signed letter found in the archives, saying that, “taking into account all your behaviour, showing a desire to correct wrongs, and sincere improvement, I consider it advisable that you gradually return to priestly work”.
The Catholic church in Poland has not yet responded to the publication of extracts from Overbeek’s book by Duży Format.
But in December it did comment on reporting by Rzeczpospolita about Loranc and another priest, Eugeniusz Surgent, who remained in the priesthood after a conviction for sex abuse, which took place when he was under the authority of the Kraków curia led by Wojtyła. Surgent reportedly then went on to abuse more victims.

New suit alleges San Diego Catholic diocese transferred assets to avoid paying sex abuse claims
They have developed a PR spin on how they’re concerned about victims ... but at the end of the day, it’s all about the money and protecting their assets,’ attorney Irwin Zalkin said of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego.
The suit, filed Tuesday (Feb. 21) by the Zalkin Law Firm in San Diego County Superior Court on behalf of more than 100 plaintiffs, alleges that the diocese transferred at least 291 real estate parcels, with a total tax-assessed value of more than $453 million, to parish corporations in order to defraud creditors at a time when the diocese was aware of “significant claims” by victims of childhood sex abuse.
These transfers, according to the lawsuit, “were done as part of a scheme created, masterminded, and designed” by the diocese and parishes so assets could not be “reachable” by creditors and those filing claims.
The lawsuit claims that the diocese made these transfers beginning in September 2019, the same month the California Legislature passed Assembly Bill 218, which, with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s endorsement, lifted a statute of limitation on childhood sex abuse claims.

French prosecutors drop 'sexual assault' probe into cardinal
French prosecutors said Saturday they had closed an investigation launched into a cardinal who admitted sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl because the statute of limitations had expired, sparking anger among campaigners.
The probe was launched in November last year after a statement by Jean-Pierre Ricard, a retired bishop made a cardinal by pope Benedict XVI in 2006.
But Marseille prosecutor Dominique Laurens told AFP: "The case was closed due to the statute of limitations."
The most serious sexual offences in France, such as rape, usually have a statute of limitations of 30 years.
Taken into custody on February 2, he told investigators he had "kissed" the girl, who he said had been about 13 years old. He had also embraced her and "caressed her over her clothes", but "there was no sexual intercourse", he added.
The victim told investigators the assaults had happened over a three-year period.
Be Brave, which campaigns to end sexual violence against children, denounced the decision by the French legal system as a "masquerade" and a "travesty" of justice.
"Nothing has changed" since the publication of the French report into sexual abuse by the clergy, the group said in a statement, calling for wide-ranging judicial and parliamentary inquiries into paedophile criminal activity.
They also called for an end to the statute of limitations on this kind of crime.
