The pope calls paedophile priests ‘children of God’

The pope has said sexually abusive priests are “children of God” who must be loved as well as “enemies” who should also be punished.

Speaking at a meeting with Jesuits, Francis pondered the possibility of offering “Christian love” to Paedophile priests who had destroyed children’s lives and the Catholic church’s reputation.

"It's not at all easy," the Pope said. "How can we get close, how can we speak to abusers for whom we feel disgust? Yes, they too are children of God, but how can we love them? It's a very tough question."

He continued, "The abuser must be condemned, indeed, but as a brother. Condemning him is to be understood as an act of charity,” adding that it was like "loving the enemy".

Jury awards $95M to man who accused Rochester-area priest of child abuse

A jury Wednesday awarded $95 million to a local man who alleged he was sexually abused in 1979 by a former Rochester-area priest who also has been accused by others of sexual assaults.

Earlier this month an Erie County woman was awarded $100 million under the Child Victims Act, or CVA. That was thought to be the largest CVA award in New York.

The victim "had a very troubled childhood," she said. "He grew up in a poor part of Rochester. The priest preyed on him."

In May 2002, Rogers was one of three local Catholic clerics to be removed from their ministerial posts due to allegations of past sexual abuse of minors.

As the Democrat and Chronicle has previously reported, Rogers, like many abusive priests, had been moved across different churches by the local diocese. He was removed after the late Bishop Matthew Clark responded to nationwide outrage over priest abuse; Clark said he found records of past misconduct against Rogers in diocesan files.

Diocese of Oakland files for bankruptcy after over 330 child sexual abuse lawsuits

Catholic schools in the diocese are not included in the filing and will continue to operate as normal, and vendors will still be paid for all goods and services delivered.

The press release also says that the mission and ministries will continue to operate.

Attorney Spencer Lucas represents 50 survivors. He calls the bankruptcy filing a historic day for his clients.

"We look forward to this being an opportunity for us to help our clients obtain accountability and compensation in the bankruptcy process," said Lucas.

Sherry Waterworth is a survivor, who is skeptical about receiving any compensation from the Diocese, post chapter 11.

"Time will tell if it's truly for the survivors or not. It sounds like the diocese knew a lot and was not forthcoming when I was a child in the '70s, I hope that will change and they'll come to the table and be honest," said Waterworth.

"Now that the Legislature has allowed some of the victims to come forward and seek compensation, the diocese is filing bankruptcy and they want you to feel sorry for them, we feel that's despicable," said Piscitelli.

‘Inhumane’: Catholic priest faces possible life sentence for ‘forcing’ multiple children into commercial sex trafficking

A federal jury on Friday found Rev. Michael Jude Zacharias guilty of one count of sexual trafficking of a minor, two counts of sexual trafficking of a minor by force, fraud, or coercion, and two counts of sexual trafficking of an adult by force, fraud, or coercion.

Zacharias groomed the children for commercial sex acts “using his position as a priest and teacher to ingratiate himself with the boys and their families as a trusted friend, mentor and spiritual counselor,” prosecutors wrote. He was able to overcome the victims’ resistance to his eventual commercial sex overtures by “gradually sexualizing conversations and conduct with them.”

While Zacharias was “sexualizing” the youths, the victims were simultaneously developing addictions to opioids which later turned into heroin addictions. Knowing the victims were all heavy drug abusers, Zacharias waited until they had nearly reached rock bottom before he began to propose the idea of them performing commercial sex acts, prosecutors said.

Woman who survived paedophile priest's church abuse ring says nun MURDERED trying to help

Teresa Lancaster, 69, was one of the 600 children abused within the Baltimore Catholic Church, and spoke out after a 456-page report released by the Maryland Office of the Attorney highlighted decades of abuse ranging from the 1940s through until 2002.

According to the report, the heinous abuse took place at Archbishop Keough High School in Maryland as hundreds of kids, including Teresa, were forced into the Archdiocese of Baltimore's "sex ring."

Teresa went to a counsellor to get some advice when she claims she was allegedly abused by Catholic priest Father Joseph Maskel.

She told The Sun: "When I went in there, he closed the door and took all my clothes off, and sat me in his lap within five or 10 minutes."

The priest had always denied the accusations up until his death in 2001 and was never criminally charged.

Meanwhile, another girl Jean Hardadon Wehner claimed she had been abused by Mr Maskell and confided in Sister Catherine 'Cathy' Cesnik, a 26-year-old nun and English teacher at the school.

She claims the nun told her she would take care of it but "then next thing we know she was murdered", according to Mr Wehner.

Sister Cathy disappeared in November 1969 and was found dead two months later in January 1970.

Following an autopsy, she was found to have been killed by blunt force trauma to the back of her head.

The report claimed either a brick or a hammer which was the size of a quarter had been created in her skull along with strangulation marks on her neck.

The report, which was released last month, stated: "Over hundred priests and other Archdiocese personnel engaged in horrific and repeated abuse of the most vulnerable children in their communities while Archdiocese leadership looked the other way."

French Catholic Church to provide clergy with scannable IDs to battle sexual abuse

Rattled by repeated cases of sexual abuse over the years, the French Catholic Church will soon provide digital ID cards with scannable QR codes that will offer colour-coded background information – ranging from green to orange to red – on bishops, priests and deacons.

No bigger than a bankcard, the IDs will certify whether or not its holder is fit to perform a sermon or has the right to hear confession.

Essentially, the cards identify whether or not the Church member is facing a sexual abuse charge.

Vatican official arrives in Bolivia amid growing abuse scandal

The escalating scandal began when Spanish newspaper El País recovered and publicized the diary of Spanish Jesuit Alfonso Pedrajas, in which he admitted to sexually abusing approximately 85 minors while working at Catholic boarding schools in Bolivia through the 1970s and 1980s. The diary also detailed how multiple Church officials covered up Pedrajas’ abuse during and after his tenure in Bolivia. The cover up led to the Society of Jesus in Bolivia sanctioning eight, as-yet unnamed, former high-ranking officials of the order. Pedrajas died of cancer in 2009.

Since then, several other Catholic priests in Bolivia have been accused of sexually assaulting minors. One, Carmelite priest Milton Murillo, was arrested earlier this month. Bolivian newspaper Pagina Siete reported that, after Church officials were made aware of abuse allegations in 2014, Murillo was punished with a transfer to Rome, but was later reinstated as a pastor in Bolivia. As with Pedrajas, Murillo’s superiors were allegedly aware of his transgressions, but failed to take any meaningful action.

A Catholic paedophile priest with a history of child abuse, of more than 20 victims, has been jailed again for “disgraceful and disgusting behaviour”.

Neville Joseph Creen, 82, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Friday, May 26 to two counts of indecent treatment of a girl under 12, indecent assault on a female and maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child.

Creen was sentenced to 12 months prison to be suspended after 3 months.

The numbers don’t lie: America’s children seem far more at risk in some churches than they would be at a drag show

The Illinois report adds to the thousands of previously reported incidents of child sexual abuse by clergy in conservative-leaning religious institutions over the past few decades. This includes last year’s report from Southern Baptist Convention leaders on allegations of widespread sexual abuse within the ultraconservative denomination.

By comparison, there have been no credible reports, to my knowledge, of child sexual abuse at drag shows. And, of course, I’m only making the comparison here because many conservatives — including religious leaders in the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Convention — falsely equate drag shows or LGBTQ people with sexual perversion. In response, Republican lawmakers are pushing measures that bar minors from attending drag shows.

Will there now be a widespread push to bar children from churches given the thousands of reported sexual abuse incidents nationwide? Don’t bet on it.

Lawsuit accuses bishop of Diocese of Portland of facilitating sexual abuse

The suit alleges that Bishop Robert Deeley was one of three high-ranking members of the Catholic Church who were negligent in allowing a high school administrator in Massachusetts to sexually abuse minors for several years starting in 2011.

"It is abundantly clear that the Catholic Church has not changed its ways," Mitchell Garabedian, the plaintiffs’ attorney, told the Press Herald in a phone interview Thursday, adding that he represents about 20 Mainers who claim they were victims of sexual abuse at the hands of clergy.

'Priest who raped me was a police informer - so I fled to Scotland'

Victims of a notorious paedophile priest who may have abused 400 children over four decades have come forward to tell their story of suffering, and allegations of cover-up by the Catholic Church and collusion with police.

The crimes took place in Northern Ireland at the height of the Troubles. Victims claim Finnegan was passing intelligence on IRA suspects to the RUC. Police knew about Finnegan’s offending as early as 1996, but didn’t act. Much of Finnegan’s offending took place in areas close to the Irish border, known during The Troubles as ‘Bandit Country’ because of intense IRA activity.

Finnegan’s other victims want justice. Some have received compensation from the Catholic Church, but that’s far from enough. Sean and others want anyone in the Catholic Church who was complicit in Finnegan’s crimes arrested and charged. They claim many clergy knew Finnegan was a paedophile while the crimes were happening. They also want the Police Service of Northern Ireland - the RUC’s successor organisation - to reveal whether Finnegan was an informer.

The abuse began when Sean volunteered as an altar boy at Finnegan’s church. Finnegan discovered Sean was diabetic. “He saw that as a vulnerability.”

Looking back on events, Sean believes Finnegan was fishing for information to pass to police while carrying out abuse. Sean lived in a republican area. Finnegan would ask him questions like “what does your father think about the Troubles? What are your uncles’ interests in the Troubles? Do your uncles get involved? Are your cousins interested? Do they want to join the IRA? Do these people have guns or any links to anybody? He was a priest so I told him the truth: I didn’t know of anybody in my family linked in any way. What would especially prompt questions would be if something happened like a bomb or a shooting.”

Sean says others have told him that when they were children, Finnegan also asked about links between their families and the IRA, and on some occasions “their properties were raided and arrests were made in the days following Finnegan being given information. Back then, people were wondering ‘how the hell did the police know your man down the road had guns or IRA membership’.” Today, they realise they spoke to Finnegan shortly before the police operations.

Sean says at one point, during the abuse, Finnegan was sent to a Catholic Church facility in Stroud, Gloucestershire, where paedophile priests were “rehabilitated”. Finnegan rang Sean from Stroud using public payphones. Sean could hear traffic, and on some occasions children. This, he says, implies the Church knew Finnegan was a paedophile, but allowed him to remain at large, posing a risk to children.
