Damned Pervert Priests - and other assorted Holy Scumbags
RE: Damned Pervert Priests - and other assorted Holy Scumbags
(June 8, 2023 at 12:27 am)Fake Messiah Wrote: Pope Benedict is not resting in peace as his estate is being sued by victims of Church sexual abuse seeking truth and justice set against a damning report commissioned by the Church itself that found Ratzinger failed to act on clergy abusers while Archbishop of Munich.

Quote:A victim of abuse demands a total of 350,000 euros from the Archdiocese and the heirs of the deceased Pope Benedict XVI This was confirmed by the man’s lawyer, Andreas Schulz, of the German Press Agency.

Previously, “Correctiv”, Bavarian radio and “Die Zeit” reported on the claim and quoted from a corresponding brief. The plaintiff is demanding 300,000 euros from the archbishopric and 50,000 euros in compensation from the heirs of the pope emeritus who died on New Year’s Eve. According to a spokeswoman, the court put the value in dispute in the process at 362,000 euros a little higher.

The man states that almost 30 years ago in the parsonage in Garching an der Alz in Upper Bavaria, about the convicted repeat offender priest H. to have been abused. “The plaintiff was thus deprived of his happiness in life, thrown off the course of life and therefore sought refuge in drugs and alcohol with all its consequences for his professional life,” says Schulz’s letter, according to “Correctiv”, BR and “Zeit”.

Benedict XVI, then still a cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1986, helped ensure that the convicted priest was reinstated in a congregation. This made it possible for Priest H. to abuse the current plaintiff at the time, according to the argument.

Not an isolated case

The Traunstein trial is not the only current case that could cost the church dearly: a former altar boy filed a lawsuit for pain and suffering before the Cologne district court, which was about a much higher sum, namely around 750,000 euros – and thus much more than what the church has been paying abuse victims to date.

For comparison: A commission set up by the Catholic Church in Germany has so far approved more than 40 million euros in so-called voluntary recognition benefits for victims of sexual abuse. According to the Independent Commission for Recognition Services (UKA), it was almost 13 million euros in 2021 and around 28 million in 2022.

In 143 cases, sums of more than 50,000 euros were awarded. In 24 cases it was even more than 100,000 euros.

Just a quick thought, without reading the whole article, WTheF does a priest have an estate?  What happened to that vow of poverty thing?

Yeah, Jesus in the Bible seemed fanatically against any material possession.

Thus bishop Fulton Sheen got himself in a lot of trouble with the Catholic Church because he wanted to gift some of the Church's land to be turned into a residential area for black people.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Watchdog group slams Pope Francis’ pick for investigating priest sex abuse

The priest selected by Pope Francis to lead Vatican investigations of child sex abuse helped cover up such abuse in Argentina, according to a watchdog group.

Victor Manuel Fernandez, 60, was chosen Saturday to lead the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which handles sex abuse allegations against members of the clergy.

“Fernandez’s recent handling of a clergy sex abuse case in his home archdiocese of La Plata raises great concern,” said Bishop Accountability co-director Anne Barrett Doyle. “In his response to allegations, he stood in stout support of the accused priest and refused to believe the victims.”

La Plata priest Eduardo Lorenzo was accused of child sex abuse in February 2019. Fernandez publicly backed the alleged perv and said the accusers had alternate motivations. While Lorenzo was investigated by police, Fernandez traveled to celebrate Mass with him.

Even as more accusers came forward later in the year, Fernandez kept Lorenzo at his post. He was only removed in October 2019 as the criminal case progressed.

Lorenzo died by suicide in December 2019, hours after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest. In announcing Lorenzo’s death, Fernandez made no mention of the allegations against him.

“For his handling of this case, Fernandez should have been investigated, not promoted to one of the highest posts in the global church,” said Doyle. “Nothing about his performance suggests he is fit to lead the Pope’s battle against abuse and cover-up.”

The Spanish priest who sexually abused children in Senegal for 25 years: ‘When he saw children, he couldn’t resist’

Victims talk to EL PAÍS about the abuse they suffered at the hands of Manel Sales Castellà, who worked as a missionary for years, even though ‘everyone knew’ he was preying on minors

Last Thursday, the Pious Schools of Catalonia released a statement saying that Manel Sales Castellà, who was one of their missionaries in Senegal, had abused “a significant number” of minors for 25 years and that the Piarist order had covered up the case “to protect the institution.”

However, according to the victims, the church knew about the abuses before 2005. “Everyone close to the priests knew that he was like that, that when he saw children he couldn’t resist. I think he was sick, I’ve never seen anything like it,” says Philippe. “At that moment, we didn’t have the strength to say anything, a priest was very powerful, it was taboo to even talk about a priest. What’s more, everyone knew him in the region. When we went out to the villages, the children would approach him because it was very rare to see a white person who spoke Diola [the local language]. He took them and sat them on his lap or put them between his legs, which aroused him. He took off my cousin’s pants and underpants and forced himself on him, then gave him one of those shirts that Spain used to send for poor children.”

“Everyone knew what was happening, it was something that was talked about in hushed tones,” says a resident of Oussouye. “There were people who tried to denounce the abuse in 2005 and people from the church threatened them.”

Catholic Church spent $10.6 million to lobby against legislation that would benefit victims of child sex abuse

A new report released Tuesday reveals that, over the past eight years, the Catholic Church has spent $10.6 million in the northeastern United States to fight legislation that would help victims of clergy sexual abuse seek justice.

In New York, for example, the Catholic Church spent $2,912,772 lobbying against the Child Victims Act, which Governor Andrew Cuomo ultimately signed into law on February 14, 2019. The act gives survivors more time to seek justice against their abusers, increasing the age at which victims are able to sue from 23 to 55.

Similarly, in Pennsylvania — where in 2018 a grand jury report detailed evidence of more than 300 priests credibly accused of sexually abusing more than 1,000 children — the Catholic Church spent $5,322,979 lobbying to keep current restrictions in place on the statute of limitations in which victims can seek criminal or civil charges against their abusers.

In August 2018, Pope Francis himself said, "The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain, and so it is urgent that we once more reaffirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and of vulnerable adults."

However, according to the report, "CHURCH INFLUENCING STATE: How the Catholic Church Spent Millions Against Survivors of Clergy Abuse," the Catholic Church has not only continued to invest in lobbying against the interests of victims, their investments in this area have actually increased over the years.

Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

On July 17, 2023, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the face of more than 124 lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by priests and other Diocese employees.

The Diocese of Ogdensburg was established in 1872. It is the fifth New York Diocese to file bankruptcy since 2019. It is one of several Catholic dioceses across the country that have filed for bankruptcy in recent years due to the rising cost of child sex abuse lawsuits.

Catholic Dioceses currently in bankruptcy across the United States include: Albany, Buffalo, Camden, Norwich, Oakland, Rockville Centre, Rochester, Santa Rosa, and Syracuse. The bankruptcy filing by the Diocese of Ogdensburg is a costly and major blow to the Catholic Church, which has been struggling to deal with the fallout from the child sex abuse scandal. The scandal has rocked the church’s reputation and led to a decline in attendance.

Syracuse Catholic Diocese to pay sex abuse survivors $100 million

Syracuse, N.Y.— The Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese reached a settlement in a bankruptcy case to pay sex abuse survivors $100 million.

The settlement is the second largest contribution by a Roman Catholic institution and its affiliates in any Roman Catholic bankruptcy case, according to a news release from offices of LaFave, Wein & Frament and Jeff Anderson & Associates. Together the offices represent over 120 sex abuse survivors in the Syracuse diocese.

The announcement came Thursday in a joint news release from the diocese and the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors. The diocese and committee officials said the settlement was reached as part of the diocese’s bankruptcy case that was filed in June 2020.

“This settlement is a significant step forward in the healing process for over 400 victims in this case,” according to Kevin Braney, of Denver, Colorado, who serves as chair of official committee. “I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my fellow survivors and their families, for their endurance as they have patiently awaited this news.”

The diocese at one point released a list of 57 sexually abusive priests.

Massive church sex scandal comes to haunt Pope's visit to Portugal next week

The Pope's arrival in Lisbon on August 2 marks the 42nd international trip of his papacy and the fourth World Youth Day, a significant gathering of young Catholics held in various cities worldwide every few years.

However, this occasion is overshadowed by the ongoing struggles of the weakened Catholic Church in Portugal and the broader developed world.

In February, an independent commission published a disturbing report revealing that over 4,800 children had been abused by Catholic clergy members in Portugal since 1950.

Shockingly, the commission's chairman suggested that this number was likely just the beginning, hinting at a much deeper and widespread issue. The revelation sent shockwaves throughout the nation's Catholic community.

Traditionally, World Youth Days have been celebrated with enthusiasm, featuring concerts, vibrant youth festivals, and daily catechesis and prayer services. However, the shadow of the abuse scandal looms large over this event, forcing the Portuguese Church and Pope Francis to encounter this reality head-on.

Filipe d'Avillez, a religion reporter in Portugal, believes that for Pope Francis' message in Portugal to be effective, it must resonate with both the victims of abuse and the bishops.

For survivors of abuse, d'Avillez argues, they must receive "encouragement and assurance that if they step forward and summon the courage to file complaints with diocesan abuse commissions there will be fair and swift action."

On the other hand, he believes that the Pope must call for transparency from the bishops, as many dioceses seem to be handling these cases with a lack of openness, returning to their old ways.

Before the commission's eye-opening report, senior Portuguese church officials had downplayed the extent of abuse, claiming that only a few isolated cases existed.
