Illinois Catholic high school to pay $2 million to settle case alleging that priest who was school principal raped a male student. Multiple warning signs ignored for years.

The payout is in a lawsuit regarding the Rev. Richard McGrath, an Augustinian priest who ran Providence Catholic High School — and took the Fifth when asked about child pornography.

The Augustinian Catholic religious order that McGrath belongs to and the school it runs that’s owned by the Diocese of Joliet has reached a $2 million settlement on the eve of a trial over a lawsuit Krankvich filed, lawyers confirmed.

Church officials admitted no wrongdoing in agreeing to the payout to end the civil case.

But records reviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times and interviews by the newspaper show there were warning signs about McGrath.

The diocese — the arm of the church for DuPage and Will counties that brought in the Augustinians to run Providence in the 1980s — has said it is looking at closing or merging numerous parishes and elementary schools, partly over finances. Diocesan officials have declined to say how much money they have spent on settlements and other costs linked to child sex abuse accusations against clergy members and others over the years.

Black survivors like Richardson have been nearly invisible in the Catholic Church sexual abuse crisis — even in Baltimore, home to a historic Black Catholic community in the nation’s oldest archdiocese. Cases of clergy abuse among African Americans are underreported, experts say, and the U.S. Catholic Church generally does not publicly track the race or ethnicity of victims. Without that data, the full scope of the abuse and its effects is unknown.

Out of 27 parishes in the archdiocese that have significant Black populations, at least 19 — 70% — previously had priests on staff accused of sexual abuse, according to an Associated Press analysis. For parishes that experienced demographic shifts, these abusers were in residence in the years after Black membership increased and white membership declined.

Tens of thousands of young Belgians who became pregnant out of wedlock between the end of World War II and the 1980s they were admitted to centers managed by the Catholic Church in Flanders. In other European countries it happened in a similar way and there were abuses, but a Belgian journalistic investigation surprised this Thursday by the extent of the abuses.

In those centers, where they were humiliated and in many cases sexually abused even while pregnant, they gave birth under the control of parish priests and nuns.

Babies, usually in the first days after delivery, were handed over to adoption families without the consent of their mothers. These families paid considerable sums for the time, between 10,000 and 30,000 Belgian francs, which did not go to the young women who had given birth, but kept the Church itself.

A not particularly pessimistic estimate would lead to 600 million francs (about $ 17 million) the money that the Flemish Church would have obtained by selling these children for four decades. 30,000 children in a population, that of Flanders, which in the last decade alone exceeded six million people.

In addition to giving birth in conditions far from the medical practice of the time, in some cases even under total anesthesia, they had to see how their newborn children were stolen to sell to adoption families. Young women were told on many occasions that babies had been born dead.

Later, those young women who had given birth under the supervision of religious were sterilized during delivery so they wouldn't get pregnant again. The fact that they had passed through these centers was known in their communities, and they were marked for life, with a stigma that made it difficult for them to form couples. They were, for the most part, single women for life.

If the Church isn't bad, why does it go to great lengths to cover up these abuses instead of turning the abusers over to the secular authorities? An organization - ANY organization - that is knowingly complicit in sexual abuse and kidnapping IS a 'bad' organization, by definition.

If the abuse was an incredibly rare thing I can almost see trying to cover it up.  But it's not rare.  It's common enough for the Church to play musical parishes with its priests to try to hide it...they don't remove the priest from a position of authority...they give him a whole new set of potential victims.

The leaders of the church are complicit...period...full stop.  They have worked quite diligently in figuring out how to cover up the abuse.

I know some people aren't as fortunate.
It puzzles me that these people who do that stuff would be affiliated with any church.
It's like, if you want to do bad things, why bother pretending about some religious whatever?

Just the opposite. It takes a well-coordinated organization to steal and sell tens of thousands of children (hundreds of thousands if we add other countries) and then launder that money.

Smyllum Park: Nuns and carer guilty of abusing orphanage children

The orphanage has been at the centre of allegations of historical abuse.

The court heard children in their care were subjected to a number of "cruel and unnatural" incidents.

One woman told the court she was beaten by McDermott after she reported witnessing her brother being sexually abused in a toilet in the orphanage.

She said volunteer worker Brian Dailey, who was later jailed for 15 years for abusing youngsters, molested the three-year-old in a cubicle.

Rather than investigate the abuse, McDermott slapped the girl and told her she was bringing her "filthy home habits into a good Catholic place".

McDermott, of London, also struck another girl with rosary beads and repeatedly struck her on the head and body.

She also ordered a boy to carry soiled bed sheets while shouting derogatory comments towards him.

Igoe, of Edinburgh, was convicted of abuse which included force feeding children and making one eat their own vomit as well as striking one boy on the head and body.

She also hit one boy's head repeatedly on a door.

Hughes, of Lanark, seized one boy by the hair before striking him with her arm. She also forced a girl into a freezing bath and held her head under the water.

The Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry said in 2018 that children had been sexually abused and beaten with leather straps, hairbrushes and crucifixes while in the care of the Order of the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul at the orphanage that is now closed.
