teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I think of these cases as individuals being bad, as opposed to the Church itself being bad.

If the Church isn't bad, why does it go to great lengths to cover up these abuses instead of turning the abusers over to the secular authorities? An organization - ANY organization - that is knowingly complicit in sexual abuse and kidnapping IS a 'bad' organization, by definition. Boru

If the abuse was an incredibly rare thing I can almost see trying to cover it up. But it's not rare. It's common enough for the Church to play musical parishes with its priests to try to hide it...they don't remove the priest from a position of authority...they give him a whole new set of potential victims. The leaders of the church are complicit...period...full stop. They have worked quite diligently in figuring out how to cover up the abuse.

I grew up in the Church and nothing like that ever happened to me or anyone I knew. Just saying.
I know some people aren't as fortunate. It puzzles me that these people who do that stuff would be affiliated with any church. It's like, if you want to do bad things, why bother pretending about some religious whatever?
