Probably has something to do with modern life cutting into the religious marketshare. Providing the services people once sought out from god, and actually delivering them for a change.
Why pray for rain when you can buy irrigation? Why pray for peace of mind when you can take it in 200mg doses? Why appeal to god to punish the wrong-doers when your courts are working overtime? Why cry unto heaven for your life, or the life of your child, when you can just go to the ER?

Yeah, but that's habitual behavior. Most of them don't actually think that god took hold of the scalpel, they just have a compulsion to be seen and heard saying such pious things. In case gods listening, maybe.....but more likely, in case someone else is.
See, I operate on the assumption that no one is as crazy/stupid as they make themselves out to be. Maybe I'm just a natural optimist.

You guys are really condescending elitists, plus you've just plain got it wrong about people around the world. I'm sure that those christians in China, Africa and other places around the world accept your concern for them (or lack of concern) as they continue to take a bigger and bigger chunk of world power and influence. You guys really think that you're what it's all about. A woman at the church I attend has a college degree and owned a business in China. She was doing quite well financially and is no superstitious savage. She was baptized with an underground group of christians at the risk of losing her business. Open up your eyes and see that there's a whole world out there full of intelligent people who are making things happen and they are not from the western world.

If she believes in vicarious redemption through the blood sacrifice of your demi-god...then she's a superstitious savage. Doesn't mean she can't be a nice person too, numbskull. If she decides to risk her business for her superstitious, savage beliefs, then that...is her own business. I'm certainly not going to tell her she can't, or criticize her for being willing to assume risk. Who said that there wasn;t a world full of intelligent people out there making things happen...plenty of which not from the western world?

Plenty of smart people believe in, and risk themselves for, stupid bullshit. Aside from having a misguided sense of courage, I don't see why they deserve praise.

Okay. You're zooming into my example of a christian from China who is not the stereotype that previous posters were trying to create for those receiving christianity throughout the world. The point I was making is that the people who are coming to Christ around the world do not not meet the image that you're all trying to portray. In fact, many of those parts of the world are gaining power and influence in the world.

Aside from China, not really. And it'd be really interesting to see the numbers re: education level vs. accepting Christianity there.
