That's called being an adult.

Especially since, according to your definition of being an adult, not only does the world stink, but it's really just that way for no purpose.  At least if I am to suffer let there be a purpose for it or why bother at all?  It just stinks.

You just made a case for believing because you want to. Because it's preferable/makes you feel better.
Some people are unwilling or unable to do that.

It's called acceptance. Of reality.
It doesn't mean they wouldn't like to feel better. They just don't to make shit up, in order to cope.

What...do you think that's silly, somehow ?

Well, if you do, then...fuck you. You're a moron, lacking credibility in regards to every existing matter under the sun.
Your judgement cannot be trusted, if you believe that simply acknowledging the facts on the ground is dumb.

If that's not what you believe, then you have my sincere apologies, of course.

Personal experiences can not be used as proof against the validity of a world-view. Also, from a biblical world-view, extra biblical 'revelations' could be anything but. Now they may be possible post christ, but are at the mercy of the individuals ability to discern wether or not they should trust in said 'revelation'. Not all beleivers have wisdom, not all believers have the holy spirit to guide them.

Neither can they be used as evidence for the validity of a worldview, particularly if they are unique internal experiences not amenable to objective examination.  They may be valid for individual believers, but it's a stretch to assert that they're universally valid.

I'm just making fun of your outlook on the world, but I do understand that you have no hope beyond the world of which you speak.  You just go on telling me how much better it is to be this way.

Quote:In religious countries, including the U.S., religious people describe themselves as happier (1). In relatively godless countries, such as the Netherlands, or Denmark, religious people are not happier (2).

This striking inconsistency between the U.S. and godless countries may have a fairly simple explanation. Religious people are in the majority in the U.S., but in a minority in Denmark and the Netherlands. Feeling part of the mainstream may be comforting whereas being in the minority is stressful.

Even within the U.S. there are curious inconsistencies. The most religious states are the least happy based on Gallup data. This mirrors the pattern amongst countries.

Countries with the highest average self-reported happiness are the least religious (3). The happiest nations are, in order, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands (4). Sweden, Denmark and Norway are the second, third, and fourth least religious countries, being exceeded only by formerly-communist Estonia in their atheism.

Are Religious People Happier?

It's unclear that your worldview equips you any better than an atheist worldview, in general. In developed countries, less religion correlates with increased happiness. In less well developed countries, religion may provide some hedge against anxiety. Regardless, there doesn't appear to be any general superiority in terms of happiness of people with your worldview. Your anecdotes about how fulfilling your Christian life is are fascinating, but do little to dispel the general picture.

Everyone does stupid shit at some point in their lives, look at Samson, tying 300 foxes together by their tails, what was he thinking.

I guess I fail to see how believing in a bearded man in the sky that created Tay-Sachs disease, filarial worms and cancer in children just to test us for something he should already know is any more hopeful than recognizing life has no real purpose.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

When you think about it, it's only the atheist who has the freedom to give purpose to his life. What does the theist say to all the horrors you mentioned? He says it doesn't matter because god has a plan. In other words, he renders this life of no consequence and falls back on that discredited philosophy the ends justify the means.

One life on Earth is better than two in Heaven.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

I may defend your right to free speech, but i won't help you pass out flyers.

Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.
