Imaginary numbers are just as real as real numbers. Tada! Another win for me plus a joke. Sort of. Was it a joke?
Back to the idiot in question. He seems to be saying, "There's an elephant, and there's zero of them." So of course this makes no sense. He's saying there is 1 elephant, but also 0 elephants. That's just a contradiction. If he just said there are zero elephants, that should be a problem for no one. Feel free to send me a private message.

"Zero" exists just as "1", "2", "3", etc. exists. Craig loves to rail against actual infinities; that's why he has a problem with "zero", because he does not accept the existence of actual infinities in the World, except, of course, when it comes to "God". But, if numbers exist in some Platonic sense, why is that such a problem? I can at least comprehend the number zero (say, when I have no money left), or even "negative" numbers (say, when my bank account overdrafts and I get all of those damn charges!), and certainly, a positive balance as well!! I can't, however, comprehend God; for all the time that I spent praying while growing up, God never spoke back to me, not once. Looking back on it, it was no different than me talking to myself. The number zero is a concept and concepts exist in the brain. The way I see it is asking "does the number zero exist?" equates to asking "is the number zero anything at all?" or in other words "is the number zero a thing at all?" since the answer is "yes" it's a thing and therefore existent. Whether or not there are actual infinities in reality is something that appears untestable to me. Feel free to send me a private message.

I can imagine one apple in my left hand and two in my right, making a total of three. I can imagine borrowing four apples from a friend, and hence, owing them four applies, which would mean a "negative 4" balance on my apple accounting sheet. I can also imagine having no apples or zero apples.
What is missing here is the distinction between zero as the location on a vector and as a set value.

If you were to peek inside someones's skull I doubt you would find anything resembling a "zero" much less cars, grandmothers, or anything else people think about. |
