Just yesterday we had a thread on some American politician making stupid comments. But Günther Oettinger, German Conservative and EU commissioner really let lose in a speech he held at a business forum. Not the first time he did something like that by all accounts. But this time (hopefully) it can cost him his job at the EU.

He called members of a chinese delegation "slit eyes" and refered to gay marriage as becoming a compulsory if things kept moving into the same direction as they do now.

A video of Günther Oettinger making jokes about Chinese diplomats and "compulsory gay marriage" has sparked controversy. Oettinger, who will take over the EU Commission's budget post, said he had not meant to offend.

As an american suffering the humiliation of a Trump campaign I sure appreciate any such bones as you can throw me.  Still I don't know whether to take heart or throw up at the thought that his mentality is even more wide spread.

He's not even the worst when it comes to politicians. The usual suspects aren't even worth quoting. That, on the other hand, is an EU commissioner from a mainstream party. That's why I even posted it. The ones bawling like Trump and gaining votes exclusively on resentments, aren't even worth mentioning.

Um, yes it is.  It's a derogatory term for Asians based upon a physical characteristic which they have no control over.  I don't think you can make "slit eye" or "slant eye" not racist in any context.

In like wise fashion saying that gay marriage is becoming compulsory is not an anti gay statement.

No, it's just a very stupid, false statement which just happens to be made by those who are anti-gay.

It's the strongest anti asian word you can find in the German language. I guess it's even stronger than the english translation. I wouldn't know of anything more racist to say about asians (in my language) than that, even if I wanted to. And believe me, keeping up with swear words always was one of my hobbies.

About the only word more racist toward Asians than "slant-eye" is "gook." Which I'm sure Drich will have some explanation as to why that word isn't racist either.

And seriously, there is not one place anywhere in the world to my knowledge where anyone is forced to marry someone of the same sex.

positively describing or negatively describing a physical charastic does not make one a bigot. What makes a person a bigot is taking the position that they are better because they have or lack a racial attribute that another race does not.

You guys who wear your feelings on your sleeves and look for key words to pigeon hole people and label them XYZ if the say 123 is the epitome of intolerance you d-bag pretend to be against.

Can't you see you are becoming the monsters you pretend to hate? If someone doesn't conform to your world view they are hated and reviled. If someone apposes or just on the surface says something concerning a key word you been trained to hate, you unleash the hell you falsely want to protect others from...

This great hypocrisy is what will define this generation.

"Gook" is on par with "nigger" in English.  Likely from the same type of origin, too.  Where "nigger" is a bastardization of the word "negro," "gook" may be a bastardization of a Korean word, as per Wikipedia's explanation of a couple of possible origins for the word:

• That when American servicemen heard the term during the Korean war, they heard the word as 'gook" instead of k(g)uk which means "national" (maybe, thus, interpreted as nationalist) goo-goo (also gugu), a term used by the US military to describe Filipinos.[4]

Both equally racist; both equally offensive.  So is "slant-eye."
