It's a systematic and intentional series of "mistranslations" used to support the cultural syncretism of the devil as seen by christians, but not as was envisioned by the judaic authors of the tales. The devil is simply an angel of god, that does gods bidding, and within the confines of limitations set out by god. It doesn't create or make evil (god does that), It's not rebellious (it doesn't even have free will), it exists solely to present us with difficulty so that we might overcome it. It's the hinderer. It wasn't the snake in the garden, either, that was the seducer.
