RE: Leah Remini Scientology Special & New Show
I cannot find any mention of an actual show or mini-series. Is there a title?

Found it:

Yep, scientology is basically cover for people who enjoy being total dicks and hurting others. My least favorite denomination, other than the baptist group that likes to shout offensive shit to upset grieving families at grave sites. Technically nothing can be lower than that.

But from what you hear from ex-staffers, pretty much everyone except the head guy gets harrassed on a regular basis, so it's not exactly sadist heaven except for D.M..

Well, the Westboro Baptist church can picked grave sites all they want in my book, at least their whole MO isn't to use psycho tricks to defraud the families out of their life savings, and then once over.

After all, the Westboro folks are all scripture cherry pickers, just like the Methodists, Lutherans, Catholics, all of them. They are scarcely that far off doctrinally, they just ignore different scriptures and emphasize other ones.

Once scripture cherry picking is allowed, we can hardly fault folks for picking and overlooking the ones they want to. When the inmates are running the institution, so to speak, instead of God, that's what's going to happen. People know better than God, why let Him mess up their fun? He's not going to step in and correct them, at least he never has so far.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this. Tibby mentioned a documentary coming out soon by a British personality he likes. I can't think of the name. Maybe he'll pop in here with it.

I found Leah's autobiography a few weeks ago and I've got it in my reading queue. Hopefully, when I'm done with Coyote Blue, Jennifer Government, and The Kraus Project, I'll read that (the inticracies of my reading queues are quite intricate, y'see).

Of course, if I hadn't gotten on this Scientology kick, I'd have only known her from those Beach Club episodes of Saved By the Bell.

And thanks for the Surviving Scientology shout-out, Alex. I'll start listening to it soon.

Jesus' standards were a bit too high. He threatened damnation for thoughtcrime and insisted that his followers had to be as perfect as God. It's no wonder that his opinion was that few would be saved and most would be destroyed.

As for Scientology, a good place to start is to Google "Alex Gibney Scientology." I remember reading a lengthy article about his life in/after Scientology which was posted online shortly before the release of his film "Going Clear" but I can't remember which site it was on. It went into a fair bit of detail about how the organization works and what it puts people through in order to keep them in line and how it deals with those who abandon the cult.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

That said, from what I know of the harassment campaigns against Scientology defectors, I don't think Miscaviage actually seems interested in reaching that point. I know he's actually got orders that if the private dicks he hires to spy on his dad see him having a heart attack, they are not to intervene, saying "if he dies, he dies," but the Squirrel Busters, the CoS's known goon squad seem more interested in annoying their targets in the hopes that they'll attack and the Church can sue. In general, their intimidation tactics seem to be more psychological than physical, like their endless filing of frivolous lawsuits that they would almost certainly lose, but to get rid of them all would likely bankrupt the target, which is how they took on the IRS and won.

Davey Boy seems to prefer leaving the physical violence to those still in the Church, which actually seems to make sense: committing vague crimes on people who are disloyal (read: unafraid) enough to try to report them and perhaps start legal action, but doing the harder stuff to those still attached enough to the church to not dare to stop it. In Going Clear, when asked what would happen if the FBI actually raided "The Hole," the ant-infested double-wide where Church executives are being held for DM's amusement, Tom DeVogt said "No. I think that everybody, one for one, would have gone, 'What do you mean? We're doing this voluntarily, we like living in these conditions.'" And this seems to have happened when the LAPD investigated Shelley Miscaviage's disappearance.

That said, apparently, when L. Ron Hubbard was still alive, he may have targeted people for assassination, but it doesn't seem like they actually followed through with any of them.
