Islam, like Christianity, was spread and enforced by the sword.  First from tribe to tribe and then from nation to nation.

Anyone who denies that is just being dishonest with themselves

Lets see who is dishonest with himself:

1. Islam means peace.

Islam comes from the root word ‘salaam’, which means peace. It also means submitting one’s will to Allah . Thus Islam is a religion of peace, which is acquired by submitting one’s will to the will of the Supreme Creator, Allah.

2. Opinion of historian De Lacy O’Leary.

The best reply to the misconception that Islam was spread by the sword is given by the noted historian De Lacy O’Leary in the book “Islam at the cross road” (Page 8):“History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myth that historians have ever repeated.”

3. Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years.

Muslims ruled Spain for about 800 years. The Muslims in Spain never used the sword to force the people to convert. Later the Christian Crusaders came to Spain and wiped out the Muslims. There was not a single Muslim in Spain who could openly give the Adhan, that is the call for prayers.

4. 14 million Arabs are Coptic Christians.

Muslims were the lords of Arabia for 1400 years. For a few years the British ruled, and for a few years the French ruled. Overall, the Muslims ruled Arabia for 1400 years. Yet today, there are 14 million Arabs who are Coptic Christians i.e. Christians since generations. If the Muslims had used the sword there would not have been a single Arab who would have remained a Christian.

5. More than 80% non-Muslims in India.

The Muslims ruled India for about a thousand years. If they wanted, they had the power of converting each and every non-Muslim of India to Islam. Today more than 80% of the population of India are non-Muslims. All these non-Muslim Indians are bearing witness today that Islam was not spread by the sword.

6. Indonesia and Malaysia.

Indonesia is a country that has the maximum number of Muslims in the world.The majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. May one ask, “Which Muslim army went to Indonesia and Malaysia?”

7. Thomas Carlyle.

The famous historian, Thomas Carlyle, in his book “Heroes and Hero worship”,refers to this misconception about the spread of Islam: “The sword indeed, but where will you get your sword? Every new opinion, at its starting is precisely in a minority of one. In one man’s head alone. There it dwells as yet. One man alone of the whole world believes it, there is one man against all men. That he takes a sword and try to propagate with that, will do little for him. You must get your sword! On the whole, a thing will propagate itself as it can.”

8. No compulsion in religion.

With which sword was Islam spread? Even if Muslims had it they could not use it to spread Islam because the Qur’an says in the following verse:

“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error”

I have heard the argument that violence in Islam is only prescribed in self defense and that any verse that condones violence is doing so in the context of an ongoing attack started by someone else.

Thoughts ?

It would seem this is pretty inaccurate. Violence is supposedly allowed for a multitude of reasons... For example, death is, supposedly, the punishment for leaving the religion of Islam. There are multiple Quran verses that would support this claim.

Let's not fool ourselves, there are violent verses in the Torah (which is actually also considered a sacred text in Islam, interestingly enough), the Old Testament (which of course includes the torah) and the New Testament. The three Abrahamic religions in general tend to be pretty violent.

That's not to say that these modern terrorist types are not perverting the original texts in some way (maybe they are, I'm no theologian), but there certainly are many verses in the Quran that would justify the behavior of the ISIS folks, misguided and insane as they might be. There is certainly no denying that Islam is NOT a religion of peace.

Islam was spread within a heathen community of cannibal barbarians by the armor, shield and sword. Or else the prophet and his followers would've turned into salamis.

That same heathen society mastered torture and slavery. they were the suppliers of slaves to both  Rome and Persia. Slaves were sold in the markets like property; actually that was the case around the whole world; but ancient Arabs were more into it.

Do you blame the prophet for protecting and spreading his message by the sword? 
Like they were gonna let him walk with an MP3 into the mall and "talk to the masses".

He was fought from day one, his wealth and family name protected him from torture to death or getting cannibalized like his uncle, and still he wasn't safe until he escaped to Medina; cheating the heathen knights who tailed him across the Arabian coast.

Before speaking about Jihad in the Quran; it would be very nice to discuss Rome's origins, how Persia came to be, WW2, the atomic bomb; the Empire of Japan, the Spanish crusades, murdering the native Americans.

"Jihad" is from the word "Gohd".

جهاد-جهد

It means to "put forth an effort".

الجهاد في سبيل الله

The war on terror directors sold you the biggest scam in human history. The real danger is not "Jihad"; the real danger is atomic weapons and tactical bombers.

They also point cameras at Muslims from poor nations wearing funny clothes and doing monkey business to convince you that the real danger "is these savages"! 
But nobody tells you about the next economical crisis.
Or what might happen if two super powers clashed; and nukes were used.

No, It's the prophet's self defense in the face of his cannibalistic brethren.
