On the one hand, using Shakespeare to comment on current events is nothing new (see in particular Orson Welles' 1938 take on Julius Caesar, setting it in the Fascist Rome of the then-present.)

However, something is very wrong if they're going to take the strict black and white view of this play, especially given that the big crux of the play is the moral ambiguity of the situation.

Also, Caesar's wife was nowhere near her husband's bloody corpse in the play.

Maybe if they did Coriolanus, where the title character is pretty open about his contempt for the people he serves under, a Trump analogy might have worked better. Then again, Coriolanus is one of Shakespeare's less famous plays, and that might not have brought in the audiences or headlines.

You know, it's kind of disappointing that with a work that has so much to say about the world today, the only thing a lot of people know about it is it has the word "Anus" in the title.

Then again, it is the most obvious observation about the play, so obvious that even the Hays Office allowed that pun to appear in the 1953 "Kiss Me Kate" film (relevant bit at around 2:56-3:02):





And to think that three years later, they took umbrage to the title song to Anything Goes implying the mere existence of "four-letter words" and demanded they change it to "three-letter words."
