I remember when Justice Scalia died, and I saw a lot of celebratory 'tweets' from people I wouldn't consider extreme, and that was sort of the writing on the wall, in my mind.

If you believe someone's death is something to be celebrated, "someone should murder them" is a conclusion you can reach pretty easily..  

And the second event of note, in my mind, was the Alt-Right guy getting sucker punched on camera.  And again, the reaction was celebratory.  Which to me says "Violence against people you disagree with is good."  

I expect we're going to see more of this stuff in the near future.  During the primaries, I remember all the explanations how Trump is "Just like" Hitler.  Or sometimes worse than Hitler.  Well, if Trump were worse than Hitler, and elected president...what should be the response to that.  If Republicans are just like Nazi's.  If Democrats are going to strip you of all your freedom and get you killed.  These are caricatures of things people have gone to war over.  

It's good for turning out the vote and selling newspapers/ad time, so it'll never go away.  But I think political violence like this is just getting started.

Well this is how divided America has become. The politics of divide and conquer, of using wedge issues to distract the public from what is really going on, has been used by the Religious Right and the Conservative Republicans for a very long time, since the GOP was took over by the Religious Right, the Dominionists, since the late 1970's and the early 1980s, and very effectively by the way. This is all about nothing more than power and control, and making money in the process. If we all do not wake up and become aware that we are being led by the nose to a theocratic fascist Christian state, then we will lose our democracy and lose all of our freedoms. Hell, how much of our freedoms have we given up already through both technology and the fear of terrorism?

I have been feeling for a long time that we are on the road to another civil war. All of you who are my fellow Americans better had ask yourself one question: will you be safe and secure in defending yourselves when the shit hits the fan? What are we doing now for both ourselves and our people to make sure to either prevent that from happening or to be prepared to face a war time existence in the Homeland?

But his history wouldn't have stopped a relative or friend with a clean history from buying a gun for him. Or he could just go to a gun show and ignore background checks.

This. At least where I live, those exempt from requiring background checks are person to person gun sales and gun sales at gun shows. Then you also have guns that have been grandfathered into the family. My other half owns three rifles. All of them handed down from his grandfather and his uncle.

I don't see how taking this opportunity to bash Republicans when Republicans were just murdered for being Republican is going to be at all productive or do any sort of good. Which is precisely what I was seeing most of here when I made that post. Though I haven't read the last several pages, so don't know if the tune has changed since.

Did any of them die? Last I heard, there was no murder–"just" attempted murder. I'm not minimizing. I honestly don't know if the news changed.

I agree that bashing is getting no one anywhere. However, I do think the Republicans in office will have to take some responsibility for the political climate in this country at some point. Eight years of Obama-bashing and then putting Trump in office has obviously triggered some folks. We are going to keep having radicals if we don't do something about the rhetoric. We are going to keep having shootings if we don't do something about gun control. The best way to treat this situation is to use it as an opportunity to fix some things.

It has been frustrating reading comments on social media. People are simply using this event to advance a personal agenda. While I do not condone what happened, I'm really not surprised. People are angry, and there is bound to be someone who is not right in the head who will just snap. People seem to forget all the things Trump has said regarding Hillary Clinton. Didn't he say for the second amendment people to do something about her? Didn't he also say he could walk out onto 5th ave. and shoot someone and people would still support him?

The reality of the situation is this man is seriously ill, in the head. He believes that a solution to a problem is violence. Which is NEVER the case. But I'm sure the right wing pundits are having a field day with this. I can't wait to hear what that piece of shit Michael Savage says about this. Keep in mind, these people were praising those people pointing guns at federal officials during that entire B.L.M. situation that played out a few years ago in NV

Indeed. Trump is not innocent in all this. Though the divisiveness existed before he came along, he only served to deepen it with his own rhetoric. Until he actually comes out and says that he is part of the problem and is sorry for what he has said about a lot of people, to the American people in public, he does not deserve a hearing. But I am not holding my breath. He is a fucking liar, and his head is so far up his ass that a public apology and genuine self-reflection on his part will never happen. Because this isn't a random act of violence and we need to have discussions. About why it happened and how to prevent it in the future.

It happened because a bad person has hate for a particular group of people and wanted to make a statement by killing as many of them as he could. Happens quite often, unfortunately, and it's sad to see people using it as opportunity to push their political narrative without even giving like, one day to be a human being about it.

Just out of curiosity Catholic_Lady, do you remind any of your Conservative co-religionists, if you have any Conservative friends, that the Non-Christian and non-Conservative people in this world are human beings?
