I live half a planet away from where I grew up, and I'm so liberal I make Jeremy Corbyn look like Margaret Thatcher.

Yeah I've lived a bunch of places. A handful states in the US, a handful of countries in Africa, Dubai and Oman.
In every country and every age, the priest had been hostile to Liberty.

Nope. Same country, same state, same county, same town, same house, hell, even the same bedroom for 27 1/2 years, although Dad is looking to have the attic remodeled so I can have more room there.

Went to the University in Lisbon, Portugal. Got married and bought a flat in Lisbon, Portugal. Was always a socialist. Whatevs.... I'm not sure those stats apply to Europeans!
