North Korea Now Making Missile Ready Nuclear Weapons

Not that the North Koreans haven't been trying for a while.

I don't think so-- the timing's not right.  The correct time to launch an attack is about a year before the next election-- you have to get people's sentiments when America is "winning," not when they've had boots on the ground for a few months and kids start getting sent home in bags.

That being said, I don't think Trump is really bluffing.  The current rhetoric makes me really suspect that we could see action sooner rather than later.

I live in Korea, and I hold the pretty unpopular opinion that war now is better than war later-- I think N. Korea is just going to become a bigger and bigger threat.  Letting it develop further is like watching a cancerous tumor to see what it's "going to do."

I was actually referring to Trump, not the Korean douche nozzle.

Okay, now to figure out how far North Korea can actually SEND those missiles before we really start to panic.

I understand that the Kims are infamous for being really crazy and the sort of leaders who think it a good idea to focus on the military to the exclusion of literally anything else, but I also know that NK really doesn't have that much in the way of resources. This is a nation whose Air Force tends to be limited to about 25 flight hours per year, partly out of a desire to keep them from flying over the borders, and partly because they really can't afford to waste that much fuel.

I've heard they might have enough to drop a nuke on Seoul, but I doubt they can really send it to America. And even in that case, if their tiny nukes do destroy Seoul (remember Fat Man and Little Boy were tiny nukes by the standards we have now) North Korea's days will likely be numbered; even China will likely consider them a liability they can't afford to keep with.

People say "if they use nukes their days are numbered", as if they are truly loose cannons whose use of nukes would likely precede their days becoming numbered.

They are not. They are supremely, utterly ruthlessly, rational survivalists. They would only use nukes if their days would otherwise be numbered anyway.

If trump's bluster about fire and fury is actually believed rather than laughed at, if would increase the chance of their using their nukes on us, not reduce it.

Nuking Seoul would just be suicide. Much more likely would be planted bombs, chemical weapon attacks, shutting down the internet or power systems, and a HEAVY barrage of conventional artillery.

And they know this.

Furthermore, they don't need nukes at all to destroy Seoul. They'll save a couple for Seoul just in case the artillery doesn't get 'er done, but their nukes will be flying to Pusan, Tokyo, and Guam, I think. Interdict the resupply, discombobulate a major adversary, and try to catch some heavy bombers on the ground.

This will be Trumply's "red line in Syria" challenge.

I think it's pretty clear he won't emulate an action he noted repeatedly in his campaign was a mistake.

And are we sure they even have the resources to reach Pusan? Because we seem to be taking for granted that a nation that can't even be arsed to feed their own people, even if it means a good-sized portion will be too undernourished to even be fit enough for military service, actually has comparable resources to the US long-distance-warfare-wise.

I think's it's very clear he already has.

I'm not at all thinking that their resources are comparable to ours, and I'm unsure why you would draw such a conclusion based on what I wrote.

I'm speaking in terms of having, say, two or three warhead-sized nukes for each target I've mentioned: Pusan, Tokyo, Guam. They certainly have the missile technology to ship a couple downrange to each target posthaste. If they actually do have miniaturized warheads, then they no doubt can export those as well via rocket. Missiles are generally tested with dummy payloads simply because testing without the payload gives inaccurate feedback.
