teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

RE: Damned Muslims
The activists are working on “normalizing apostasy in Islam,” which is of course, “a monumental task.”

Quote:It is widely known that apostasy in Islam carries a death sentence or at least severe public and private censure. That is why a great number of ex-Muslims hide their disbelief from family, friends, and society. However, some noteworthy ex-Muslims have tried to address this phenomenon by proclaiming their apostasy and encouraging others to do the same.

Although rulings on apostasy vary according to interpretation or societal norms, just the fear of any kind of retribution is debilitating. Raif Badawi, Mishal Khan, Asia Bibi, and others accused of blasphemy have paid dearly with their lives and liberty in countries like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Maryam Namazie is a well-known human rights activist who is also co-founder of the Council of ex-Muslims of Britain. The organization is the British branch of a larger body of ex-Muslims called the Central Council of ex-Muslims.

The organization was formed with the express purpose of enabling other ex-Muslims to come forward. The manifesto states that “by the choice of members to openly publish their names and photographs, they act as representatives of many other apostates who fear coming out in public.” Judging by the traffic to websites such as Namazie’s, Sultan’s, or Apostate Prophet’s, it is evident that there is much soul-searching underway in the Islamic world.

Ultra-modern Singapore's dark secret: female genital mutilation

Quote:Singapore is modern and cosmopolitan but social values remain conservative and female genital mutilation -- banned in much of the world -- is not illegal.

Saza Faradilla was 22 when she discovered her genitals had been cut when she was a baby, part of a quietly persistent traditional practice among Singapore's minority Muslim community.

"Mother said that you were cut because I didn't want you to be adulterous, because it's clean -- and because it's part of the religion."

Known in Singapore by the Malay language term "sunat perempuan", it often involves cutting the clitoris or clitoral hood.

The activists against FGM have been accused of not being good Muslims, while some members have not told their families about their involvement to avoid tension.

The true scale of female genital mutilation worldwide is unclear, but the United Nations estimates at least 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone the procedure in 31 countries across Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

There is no official data on how common it is in Singapore but 75 percent of Muslim women surveyed by Saza's group had undergone genital cutting.

Activists are not pushing for a ban for fear the practice could be pushed underground, but want health officials to state publicly it is not medically necessary and the Islamic council to state it is not a religious obligation.

Mob of 80 Muslims sacks Hindu temple over blasphemy row

Police said the mob attacked the temple in Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab province Wednesday afternoon following the release on bail of a young Hindu boy accused of blasphemy.

“Some 70 to 80 protesters then attacked and smashed the windows of the temple,” Ahmed Nawaz, a police spokesman from the district, told AFP.

The boy had earlier been arrested over rumours that he committed blasphemy, a hugely sensitive issue in Pakistan where insults against Islam and the Prophet Mohammad carry harsh prison sentences and the death penalty in some instances.

The country’s strict blasphemy laws have been disproportionately used against religious minorities in the past, including the Christian community with critics arguing they are frequently abused to settle personal scores.

The attack was just the last in a string of assaults on Hindu places of worship in recent years, including an attack late last year that saw around 1,500 people overrun and set fire to a temple in northwestern Pakistan.

Indonesian army hints at ending 'virginity tests' for female recruits

For decades, the army has subjected female recruits -- as well as, in some instances, the prospective wives of male soldiers -- to the "abusive, unscientific, and discriminatory" tests, Human Rights Watch said in a statement on its website.

During the invasive tests, women have two fingers inserted into their vagina by a doctor of either sex, in a bid to assess whether they have an intact hymen.

Virginity testing has also been used on female police recruits, according to Human Rights Watch.

Harsono, who is based in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, said there was a view among men that "easy women" should be barred from taking military and police roles.

Hundreds of enraged Muslims killed a manager of a factory because of blasphemy charges and then took selfies with his burning body

A mob of hundreds of enraged Muslims descended on the factory in the district of Sialkot in Punjab province on Friday after the Sri Lankan manager was accused of blasphemy.

The mob grabbed Priyantha Kumara, lynched him and publicly burned the body, according to police. Factory workers accused him of desecrating posters bearing the name of Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

Punjab police chief Rao Sardar said on Saturday that investigators arrested prominent suspects after seeing video showing their role in inciting workers to violence, killing the manager and dragging his body outside, and taking selfies with his burning body and proudly admitting what they did.

Khurram Shahzad, a police official in Sialkot district, said 123 suspects were detained in raids.

In the conservative society of Pakistan mere allegations of blasphemy can provoke mob attacks. The country's blasphemy law carries the death penalty for anyone found guilty.

On Friday (December 3), a Pakistani journalist revealed how hatred against Hindus is indoctrinated in educational institutes in the country. He made the remarks in the aftermath of the brutal lynching of a Sri Lankan factory manager on charges of blasphemy.

When my children return from school, they ask me bizarre questions. One day, my son asked whether we have Hindus in Pakistan. I told him about my Hindu friend. He then told me how his teacher encouraged him to kill Hindus in Sindh.

“If you have Hindus in Sindh, then, why don’t you guys kill them,” the son of the Pakistani journalist was taught at school. The journalist added, “The grooming of children in these schools is disturbing. We have to keep an eye on what they are being taught. This (educational) system that has been running for 40-50 years is responsible for the indoctrination.”
