What godly miracle would it take?
#31
RE: What godly miracle would it take?
Sure what would be godly of god: so let's say that he or she appeared on Earth few thousand years ago and organized school to teach people real science and science method and then also how to use that science for good having always in mind what is best for the people. He doesn't waste time and people's minds with primitive and very divisive doctrines of sin that forbid silly stuff that are not necessarily illegal and not necessarily wrong like the thinking of impure thoughts or touching urine or gay marriages that unnecessarily put people on the spot who could otherwise give valuable contribution to society.
So he would also he be a social teacher showing people how to be moral, teach them that slavery is bad and when he gets attacked, by let's say Romans, because he teaches that slavery is bad he stops them with his supernatural powers that they stand aghast and see that he is worth listening to, but even going beyond cheap tricks and in like cases of slavery showing that it can be avoided by technology and common sense.
So he wouldn't live on Earth just few years or decades but centuries, until he makes sure people got it.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

If there is a god and if that god wants me and everyone else to acknowledge that it exists and it can do anything it wishes.... well then, the answer seems as obvious as gravity.
Show up for everyone, share some words of godly wisdom specially tailored to each and every one of us.... repeat every so often to keep us in check, say every year, or even less. Cure the sickly... actually, keep diseases magically at bay and in such a way that natural selection doesn't get disturbed.

Oh... and do this since there have been humans on the planet.

That none of it has ever happened is telling.

But what if he doesn't want to?
What if he doesn't care at all what we think?

Maybe he rigged the rules because he just likes burning people? Dunno
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.

Well, according to the holey babble, god can do anything except deal with iron chariots.

I expect the M1A1 Abrams has him all of a tizzy. Or the Leopard II, or....well one can get the picture.

If he doesn't want to, then all the priesthood is working against god.

If he doesn't want to, then all the priesthood is working against god.

And worse, "Worship me or I shall smite thee" says god. No matter how one frames it, it is dei-thuggery.

Then you have the deists, who claim some god created everything and just forgot, or something.

Add in the presuppositionalists, who claim that you really believe not only in god, but their particular flavour of god, you are simply in denial of whichever god. The list goes on and I am unsure which one annoys me more. Is god a pan-galactic thug only able to demand respect by means of menaces? Or a god who really can't be arsed? Or perhaps a Chopra style deepity, or outright solipsism, or brains in a vat, or some other mad and unevidenced proposal.

Just as a sampler, on another site, a member used Tarot cards to make predictions. The guy/girl really swallows this crap. There is a running tally of hits/misses. One of the predictions was that Trump would launch a nuclear strike on NorKor in September 2017. Do you hear that squeak? That would be the goalposts actually sprinting. There is no hoop he/she would not leap through to maintain faith in whatever he/she believes.

I could be persuaded that a god exists with the right evidence but there is literally nothing that could convince me it was a GOOD god. That ship has sailed. No matter how many wrongs in the world it could right would judicious smitings and miracle cures (for the diseases it created), it would never be enough. That original sin of fucking up its creation is inexcusable.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?

---

There is no better way to convey the least amount of information in the greatest amount of words than to try explaining your religious views.

Just thought of a Godly miracle I would find convincing:

the very earth starts vomiting out remarried divorced people.

THAT would do it.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

I agree with him that a God would know what would convince. But I disagree that a God could do the convincing by any method besides mind control and I also know that an alien could in theory do the same.
