Catholic Church Faces Reckoning in Chile as Sex Abuse Scandal Widens

Special prosecutors, who have been appointed in each of Chile’s 15 regions, are examining cases involving 104 potential victims, half of whom were underage when the reported offenses took place. Nearly 70 clergy and lay people are under investigation, including three bishops.

Cardinal Ezzati, who has denied accusations of covering up abuse, is the highest-ranking church official in Chile under investigation. Next week a congressional commission may consider revoking the Italian-born cardinal’s Chilean citizenship, which was awarded in 2006.

What's needed is an angry mob of villagers with torches and pitchforks.

The mobs could dismantle all the churches and take all the gold and so forth and use it to help feed their people and help lift them out of poverty. Chile is one pobrecito place.

Such a mindset is becoming rare, but it persists. My own long dead father who was a genuinely nice guy had that flaw. That strange deference to blokes who wore dresses and did nothing useful.

On the upside, before he died, we had a "cards on table" exercise. In that, he flat out stated that he knew full well what the RCC was about and what they did, but that he couldn't get their grip out of his mind. Quite the admission, but I am glad of it. 

Oh and before anyone asks, he knew I was atheist for decades. Never a cross word spoken. He did what many "christians" fail to do. He accepted me for me. No more, no less. As did I in the opposite direction.

Harrisburg Diocese identifies 71 alleged sex abusers, cites failure of bishops

Harrisburg is now the second diocese to get ahead of the grand jury report. The Erie Diocese in April identified more than 50 priests and lay people accused of child sexual abuse.

But everything is now okay because the pervert in the cassock said he was sorry.  Isn't that special?

Child abuse inquiry: School 'reputations put before abuse victims'

Two leading Roman Catholic schools "prioritised monks and their own reputations over the protection of children", a report says.

"Appalling" abuse was inflicted on pupils at Ampleforth in North Yorkshire and Downside in Somerset over 40 years, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) said.

But, the report said both institutions attempted to cover up the allegations.

Ten individuals, including monks, have been convicted or cautioned for abuse.

The report, based on evidence heard by the IICSA's investigation of the Roman Catholic Church and the English Benedictine Congregation, said, however, the true extent of the abuse is "likely to be considerably higher" than the number of convictions.

It states many of the perpetrators did not hide their sexual interests from the children and pupils were often abused in front of each other.

"The blatant openness of the activities demonstrates there was a culture of acceptance of abusive behaviour," it said.
