Students at Central Catholic HS in Portland stage walkout over baseball team racial chant

Dozens of students at Central Catholic High School, a private school in Southeast Portland, staged a walkout Friday morning, demanding accountability following a racial chant controversy involving the varsity baseball team.

On Monday, school spokesperson Jeanie-Marie Price confirmed a racial slur was used by a baseball player during a cheer before a game last week.

While the school did not specify the hate speech that was used, during Friday’s walkout—organized by the school’s Black Student Union—student leaders alleged that the chant included the “N-word.”

“The baseball team used a chant that was a call to action. It was not a word; it was not a microaggression—it was ‘let’s get those hard r’s,’” said senior Kaela Woodard.

According to Woodard, students learned the chant has been part of a team tradition for years.

Students also claim one player was pressured to participate as part of hazing, while coaches stood by.

Parents and community members supported students as they walked out.

BSU members say they have met with the school’s principal and expressed disappointment that the involved students have remained in class.

“It seems like, in situations like this, the school is actually protecting those who are committing these offenses,” said senior Chris Daugherty.

“Admin here keeps saying that their hands are tied, so we’re trying to take the next step to create change this school year,” Woodard added.

Students plan to take their concerns to the Archdiocese of Portland and hope to schedule a meeting with the board.

They are calling for varsity baseball players to be removed from the team, junior varsity players to take their place, mandatory anti-racism and anti-hazing training for coaches, and revisions to the student handbook.

I guess I would ask what is wrong with these people that they constantly intrude into people's private lives, but, like I said before, they are fighting for their own existence because, in a society where women have one to three children, there is just no way there will ever be enough to spare for celibacy.

Supreme Court declines to dismiss Peter’s Pence lawsuit

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops‘ efforts to dismiss a lawsuit alleging it misled donors about the purposes of the annual Peter’s Pence collection.

In 2020, a Dallas law firm and a Rhode Island parishioner alleged in a federal lawsuit that the USCCB misled donors regarding how Peter’s Pence collection funds would be spent. Plaintiff David O’Connell alleged in court documents that the USCCB promoted the collection as assisting in the charitable works of the pope, but Italian media reports suggested Peter’s Pence funds were invested in part in real estate and Hollywood films.

Vatican rejects proposal to allow sermons by Catholic women

The Vatican on Tuesday reaffirmed a long-standing rule that only an ordained priest or ​deacon can give a sermon at a Catholic mass, ‌rejecting a request from German bishops to broaden the practice and allow sermons by women or other laypeople.

"The current discipline cannot be dispensed ​from," said a release from the Vatican's Dicastery for ​Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, ⁠which oversees worship by the world's 1.4 billion Catholics.

Cardinal Baldassare Reina denies funeral Mass for a known guitar player after he learns that he was a Freemason

Bruno Battisti D’Amario, an 88-year-old classical guitarist who died on 5 August and whose funeral had been scheduled for Friday at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Montesanto, known as the Church of the Artists, in Rome.

Battisti D’Amario was a prominent musician who taught classical guitar at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples and worked extensively with the composer Ennio Morricone. His membership of Freemasonry was publicly disclosed after his death by the Grand Orient of Italy (GOI), which described him as a “brother master” and offered condolences to his family.

The GOI said Battisti D’Amario had founded the Giuseppe Leti Lodge in Rome and composed the organisation’s official anthem. It also said he had twice served as president of the District College of Venerable Masters of Lazio and had been a Councillor of the Order.

The revelation led to a review of the planned funeral. Don Fabrizio Maria Gatta, a priest associated with the Basilica of Santa Maria in Montesanto, said the church had initially agreed to the funeral at the request of Battisti D’Amario’s daughter. “We didn’t know he was a Freemason. I’m just learning that from you,” the priest told La Bussola Quotidiana.

After consulting the Diocese of Rome’s legal office, Cardinal Reina refused permission for the funeral Mass. “I called Cardinal Baldassare Reina, Vicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome and my immediate superior, and after consulting the legal office of the Diocese of Rome, he had no choice but to deny authorisation for the funeral Mass,” Monsignor Staglianò said.

Massachusetts bishops: Eliminating ‘any legal restraint’ on late-term abortion ‘gravely immoral’

The “elimination of any legal restraint on late-term abortion” is “a radical measure which is gravely immoral,” the Catholic bishops of Massachusetts said.

The bishops made the comments in a July 29 statement issued in response to the July 22 passage by the Massachusetts House of Representatives of a measure removing prior legal restrictions on abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy. Senate passage followed on July 31, the last day of that chamber’s formal session.

The new law allows physicians to perform abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy if in their “professional judgment” it is medically necessary. It also eliminates the requirement that late-term abortions be performed in a hospital setting, allowing licensed physicians to provide abortions in other eligible health care and treatment centers.

In Massachusetts, which has some of the most permissive abortion laws in the nation, abortions after 24 weeks had previously been allowed only to preserve the patient’s life or their physical or mental health, or in cases of lethal or severe fetal abnormalities.

“As Catholic bishops we have a moral responsibility to present and uphold Catholic teaching and the sacred God-given dignity of every human life from conception to the natural death,” the bishops’ statement read. They had expressed hope the Senate “would not follow the House on this measure.”

The four Massachusetts bishops — Archbishop Richard G. Henning of Boston, Bishop Robert J. McManus of Worcester, Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha of Fall River and Bishop William D. Byrne of Springfield — released their joint statement through the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, the public policy arm of the Catholic Church in Massachusetts.

Ireland's painful reckoning: 99 infants unearthed so far at site of Catholic mother and baby home

For the past year, state-appointed archaeologists and forensic specialists have dug up parts of a playground and parking area laid atop the old septic chambers of the St. Mary’s Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, a rural town in County Galway. The home ran from 1925 to 1961.

So far, the remains of 99 infants have been identified and removed from two separate sites, the excavation team told Courthouse News. The first baby remains were discovered last fall.

Likely hundreds of more remains will be found. A forensics facility was opened to study the skeletons and match DNA with living relatives.

Thousands of pregnant girls, expelled by their families, went through St. Mary’s doors and hundreds of their babies died prematurely, likely due to mistreatment and lack of nourishment.

Maine’s Catholic diocese reaches settlements with dozens who sued for abuse

Maine Catholic’s diocese has settled more than 100 claims brought by people who said they were sexually abused as children by clergy.

Roughly half of the claims were covered by a seven-figure financial amount, according to one lawyer for the plaintiffs.

“This process has brought life changing validations after decades of institutional silence and concealment,” attorney Michael Bigos said Thursday.

San Francisco parishes hit with massive bills for sex abuse settlement

When the Archdiocese of San Francisco announced in late June that it would pay $395 million to hundreds of people who were sexually abused as children by Bay Area priests, archdiocesan leaders also quietly sent word to local parishes, schools and other church-run facilities: The cost of the archdiocese’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy settlement would be theirs to bear, too.

Soon after, the bills — called assessments — began arriving, with news of each parish's obligation spelled out in letters from pastors and meetings with parish officers across an archdiocese that is home to 442,000 Catholics in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties. In a letter, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone wrote that the archdiocese could not shoulder the settlements alone.

For St. Agnes Church, founded in 1893 in San Francisco's storied Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, longtime parishioner Robert Boguski learned in July that the tally is $5 million — a figure that will "decimate" the investment account the parish maintains to help pay operating expenses, Boguski told NCR, citing conversations with members of the St. Agnes finance committee.

"We're devastated," Boguski said of the church where he was married in 1983. "We don't know how we can manage this."

It's a scenario playing out over and over in an era of reckoning for the Catholic Church in the United States: pastors and parishioners learning that their houses of worship are facing settlement obligations, some totaling millions of dollars, regardless of whether they were linked to past misconduct. Parishes nationwide are scrambling to help cover compensation for survivors of sexual abuse.

Catholic entities, with and without turning to bankruptcy, spent more than $5 billion just between 2004 and 2023 to settle more than 16,000 allegations of sexual abuse of minors by priests, deacons or religious brothers, according to a 2025 report by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University.

And the settlements have kept coming since then: $880 million from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to more than 1,300 survivors, on top of earlier settlements to other survivors totaling more than $600 billion; $323 million from the Diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y., to about 600 survivors; and $180 million from the Diocese of Camden, N.J., to about 300 survivors.

To varying degrees, parishes and schools are helping to pay those settlements. In Rockville Centre, for example, 136 parishes representing more than a million Long Island Catholics paid $53 million — roughly 16% — toward that diocese's $323 million settlement, in amounts ranging from five to seven figures.

‘Vote NO’: Virginia bishops instruct Catholics on abortion, same-sex marriage amendments

At the Basilica of Saint Andrew in Roanoke on Sunday, a priest read a letter to the congregation at the end of Mass from Virginia’s two Catholic bishops that condemned two constitutional amendments before voters this fall.

The priest was met with a round of applause.

But the language used in the bishops’ letter, which was sent to hundreds of Catholic churches across the commonwealth, does not accurately convey the effects of the reproductive healthcare constitutional amendment, according to the patron of that amendment.

Ballot Question 1, if approved, would enshrine access to the whole spectrum of reproductive healthcare into Virginia’s constitution, including abortion, prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, miscarriage management and fertility care. It would also protect doctors, nurses and patients from being punished for providing that care, and it would allow for restrictions on access to abortion during the third trimester of pregnancy except when the patient’s health is at risk or the pregnancy cannot survive.

The letter, written by the Virginia Catholic Conference and approved and signed by Bishops Michael Burbidge of Arlington and Barry Knestout of Richmond, claimed that the constitutional amendment would allow minors to access abortion care without parental or guardian consent. The letter also claimed that the amendment would “endanger women’s health and safety” and would lead to the denial of healthcare for any infant born alive after an attempted abortion by healthcare providers.

State Sen. Jennifer Boysko, D-Fairfax, who patroned the constitutional amendment in the Senate, called that characterization by the bishops a “scare tactic” to motivate their congregations to vote against the measure.

“That’s not how abortion works, and that’s not what we’re talking about here,” she said in an interview. “I think it’s unfortunate that they’re not using accurate information. … Fearmongering is not good policy.”


Virginia’s two Catholic bishops also took aim at the marriage equality constitutional amendment in their letter.

The amendment would remove the prohibition on marriages between persons of the same sex or gender from the Virginia Constitution’s Bill of Rights. It would be replaced with the fundamental right to marry and would require the state to recognize and treat equally under the law any lawful marriage between two adults, regardless of the sex, gender or race of either person. The proposed amendment would prohibit the state from denying a marriage license to two adults because of their sex, gender or race.

In the church letter, the bishops said that they “affirm the dignity of every person” but also said that marriage is “created by God” and “will always be the union of a man and a woman.”

“God’s design for marriage — woven into the fabric of our being — was established before any nation, religion or law,” the letter continued. “We are called to honor and preserve it. The marital union — between a man and a woman who give themselves completely to each other — is a unique and irreplaceable bond that is the basis of the family and society.”

Former Democratic state Sen. Adam Ebbin, who patroned the constitutional amendment, said in response to the letter that everyone is entitled to their opinion, “as misguided as it might be.”

“Virginia is in the 21st century and this has nothing to do with what’s going on in the church — no one is telling the church that they have to marry divorced people or people who they don’t want to marry, they should respect that not everyone follows their view,” Ebbin said.

He added that he felt confident that the constitutional amendment will pass, regardless of the bishops’ letter.
